Oh yeah, definite tonal differences between the Yamaha and the Reverend. I also have a Musicman Caprice and a Fender Dimension V HH which are kind of my front line players at the moment. I will probably be swapping out the Dimension for my new Fish when it arrives.

Tonally, the best direct comparison is probably between the 3 passive PJs (Decision, Caprice, and the Yamaha), which are are all quite different animals.

The Yamaha is by far the hottest output of the three, and it definitely has a very big, growly tone. Probably the most traditionally P-Bass sounding out of all three, whereas the Caprice is both the lowest output and the most articulate, being essentially a passive HH in a PJ's skin. The Reverend sits comfortably in between the two.

Just placed my order on a new Mercalli 5 FM in Turquoise w/maple fretboard! drool

It'll make a great pair with my Rock Orange Mercalli 5 FM w/rosewood fretboard. :thumbsup:

I'm so stoked :hyper::bassist:now the waiting begins...I'm hoping to have it by the end of next week.

I'll post pics once it arrives. :)

I just posted this in the Basses forum, but thought I'd cross post here for the rest of the Reverend Fans. :D:bassist:

Here's my new Reverend Mercalli 5 FM, it's my second one, and first impressions right out of the box is, this thing plays absolutely fantastic, the action & intonation were dead on, the fit/finish are top shelf (Kudos to Reverend Guitars). I tossed an old set of flats on it, and it feels like home.

Did you get one with roasted neck?

I'm thinking about picking up a Reverend 4 banger to go with my 20th- but can't decide between Mercalli or decision

Why the need for a second Mercalli 5er?

Ya know, I was wondering that, based on the neck I have, compared to the necks on Reverends home page, I'm going to go with "Non Roasted"...mine is darker than my Orange Merc, but not as dark as what's posted on their page.

There are subtle differences between my two as well, for example:

-My orange one has a "2 screw" jack plate, my new one is 4 screws with the laser etched Reverend wings.
-My orange one has a plain 8 screw neck plate (6 main & 2 small to hold the plate), my new one has 6 screws with the laser etched Reverend logo.
-My orange one has plain chrome dome knobs, the new one has chrome domes with visual indicator divots (like the black knob).

Do It!! I think either is a sound choice. If I ever add a 4 banger again it'll be a Thundergun in the gunmetal finish.

Not so much a need, more of a want :D...That said, I've been messing around with some other fellas, thinking about putting together another band, with those guys I have my Precision V tuned ADADG, this new Merc may join that band...or I may just keep rocking the P over there, it does sound pretty sweet.

Man, that yellow with tort is pretty sweet...And that J Rail pup is pretty intriguing, wish they offered that in a 5er. :(

LOL yeah, I've got Chromes on everything I own :bag:... except my 97 Jazz bass, that has rounds on it, and it's mean, throw some distortion on top and it'll tear your head off...just love that bass, really only use it the studio, and on the occasional rare gig.

IMHO these Mercs really play well with flats, but, if I should ever land a 3rd Merc...maybe it'll get some rounds.

Chromes are awesome. I've got an EBMM wearing labella deep talkins, and, to me, they are mud city.

My next reverend will wear chromes (for their articulation) or TI flats (for their crazy amount of mids and tight lows).

Either way, it will be a flats machine to go into a nice vintage preset on my vt deluxe. The Mercalli 5 will be my modern machine -rounds into a more modern setting on the vt.

Question - I am currently waiting on a Rumblefish that I bought from a fellow TBer. It was listed as a Rumblefish RL5 (although I think it may actually be R5L?). Can anybody tell me anything about the specs on this bass? It has the two knob and the pickup switch which I understand was standard on XL Rumblesfish - is this the same thing?

After getting my bass tech to setup the Rumblefish (it wasn't in a very playable condition when it arrived), he made some interesting suggestions for re-configuring some of the wiring, among other modifications.

It looks like we will be moving the input jack from the front panel to the side and then adding a second volume knob to enable each pickup to be controlled separately, along with replacing the existing pots and switch. We are also putting in a graphite nut, and probably replacing the tuners with Schallers.

Should be pretty cool when it's all done. I'll post pictures.
