Congrats on the beautiful new bass, she's a looker.

I would absolutely love a comparison of the two, especially since the most obvious difference is the set vs bolt on neck & the top wood sculpting, but most of the other hardware/electronics appears to be the same between both instruments.

What do you think? Does one have any notable strength over the other?

I haven't received it yet, but that's something that I'm very interested in also (and one reason why I didn't get another Thundergun). My guess is that any differences will be subtle. I'll report back...

Looking to buy a new bass and have been intrigued by the Mercalli 4. Love the looks and from what I can judge from YT vids and descriptions here, it seems a cracking tone.

I currently have a US standard J and Mike Dirnt RW P bass. Both are great basses in their own right, but I want something a little different.

The M4 seems to be very well regarded here in terms of build, tone and good value for money.

It's a special order through the UK stockist though, so I would have to pay a non-refundable deposit. No chance of trying before buying, although I would be able to get the remainder refunded if it wasn't suitable.

I play a wide range of material in a covers/wedding band and like a big, clean tone. Using a Mesa Subway D800 and matching 112 and 115 cabs.

Any advice guys? Any negatives?

I think the Mercalli will be right up your alley tone wise. Big & Clean will be no problem.

I use the Genzler Magellan 800 through a GK Neo412 and get HUGE clean tone, your D800 & cab combos should net you the results you're shooting for.

As far as negatives? I haven't come across any...everything I throw at both my Mercalli's they handled wonderfully.

I guess my one (and really only) gripe would be, I think Reverend should include at least a gigbag with the bass, I know they don't, which I assume is to keep costs down...I don't know about you, but I would NEVER take a gig worthy bass to a gig with no case/bag.

I agree with you regarding the case. The retailer carries the proper Reverend bass cases, priced at £149. Not sure what quality of gig bag I would get for a similar price.
I am gigging every weekend, so would have to have some sort of protection.

Exactly, and I'm with you. I would never buy a bass without getting the "right" case for it. Or take it it to a gig no less! But some people only use gig bags. Especially bigger cities with better public transportation. Gig bags are easier than hard cases on buses, subways...So selling a bass with a hard case, raising the cost to include it, is kind of a waste for those that only want a gig bag.

Ibanez makes a good, cheap, readily available gig bag. It's my preference.

And- Mercalli 4 for the win! Rich deep tone.

Alpine green or copper fire for me.

Yep, I figured it was partly due to cost saving, and yep, I do the same with a gigbag (though I do have two VERY nice Reverend hard cases under the bed ).

For me, the best setup is going to be both my Mercalli's, in one new Mono dual bass bag.

I have 2 of the Reverend cases, and I can say they are super good quality (and look fantastic), and worth every penny of that price...For me, I use an old worn Fender dual bass gig bag, until I get around to buying a new Mono.

For my Brad Houser 5s I use Gator Pro-Go gig bags. I am extremely happy with the protection, utility, and fact that you can adjust their carry height since I'm 6'3".

I acquired the same bass in the same color recently. I also had not played one before ordering, however I did have a Reverend Rumblefish PJ several years ago and knew I'd at least love the neck. Ends up I love everything about the Mercalli. Tone, workmanship, weight, balance, everything is spot on. I installed TI Jazz flats and it sounds quite excellent through all of the amps I have. I think you'll love it. Fits a Gator Transit gig bag perfectly.

Yep, I know, the only reason I want a Mono (instead of just using my Rev Cases), is..With the Mono dual bass bag, I can carry both my basses, on my back, whilst leaving my hands free for amps, cabs, beer etc...

Plus, the Mono dual case is rugged as hell too.

Mono bags are really good. The first few Wattplowers came with a mono before we modified the cases to fit the Watt.

I've had a Gator Go Pro for four years and recently bought a Gruv Gear Gig Blade.
I definitely like the side-carry feature of this and walking around with it on my shoulder...more comfortable than strapping a case to my back and ducking when going through doorways.
