hmmm... hadn't reallly noticed that there was a 'fish mega-thread. Last night I swaped out he stock pup's for a set of Duncan SJB-1's in my J' fish. Yessiree! A much better sounding bass. I did hte ame with my PJ ages ago. Aero's in that one. While I love the Reverend playability and light weight. Those stock pickup's gotta go ...

While I'm at it ... When I opened up the J I found the same cavity that is in the PJ. SO swapping from a J to a PJ would be cake. Any decent luthier can cut a PG for you if you have the one to template from. Just order up a blank and away you go.

Ya know, that cavity is damned near big enough for a Dark Star... it would need a little widening but not all that much. Say 3/th's inch. Maybe the rear cavity but with the poles oriented neckwards ? Any of you photshop gus out there can handle that for us ?



ooo. nice job on the Green & Black Trevorus. Kinda understated for my taste. I could dig a pastel. Surf Green, Shell Pink, Coral, the (whattheheckdidtheycallit) red that looks like Orange - that one is killer in an original faded Fender! I saw a 60's J that had that finish a while back and it if weren't for the ski jump neck and the $7500 price tag ... the color still haunts me though ...

See I think the Rev stock pickups are a bit hot. It seems to me that hot pickups tend to suppress the high's in favor of low mids. The basses come off as real punchy but the imbalance leads to a lack of detail. When you load the 'fish with a more balanced, detailed pickup, something really magical happens with all that chambering. It's got this sweet airy thing goin' on. Kinda heading in the Dano or maybe even JC direction and away from the steroidal uber-PJ direction.

I would admittedly be a fan of more vintage sounding basses and pickups. Hence SJB-1's rather than 2's and the Areo Type 1's. (The SJB-2's being a hotter pickup, I'm guessing that I'll find that I like the 1's more...) Being a roots americana type, that probably makes some sense.

I'm going to drop a few tracks with the 1's and then swap in a set of SJB-2's for comparison. If I get nutty enough (and enough time) I'll swap the Reverends back in as well, at least for a cameo appearance. I'm already guessing that the SJB-1's will end up being the pickup for me in the J.

Interesting . . . I had the opposite experience. I was going to convert a JJ Fish to a PJ (still have the P pickup and pickguard) and found on the JJ I had the neck cavity was too narrow for the PJ.

I'm not sure which one I looked at but the last 2 JJs I had were both skunk stripe necks. So maybe when the PJ model went into production the routes/cavities were the same? (just guessing here)
