I've had 2 Rics stolen, my original 1979 4001 jetglo and a '91 V63 fireglo that went missing in transit (never received it). It is the ultimate bummer. Particularly in the case of the V63 as it took a year to get the insurance money and I lost £200 ($400) due to a change in exchange rates.

Melt, you're a man to envy....I only have one Ric, a '73 JetGlo4001 that Martin Petersen refurbished a few years ago, but it was my first 'serious' bass and still a passion. I took it into The Bass Centre a few years ago to try various amps and drew quite a crowd of the usual cynical folks that inhabit music stores...they reckoned it was one of the best Rics they'd ever heard, if it is or if it ain't I don't care I love it!

It seems to be developing a worrying crescent shaped crack in the paintwork between the nut and the back of the neck...the headstock still feels rock solid so I'm hoping that it's just a crack in the paint/lacquer

Thanks for the comments though. It's ironic really, when I look at the collections some people have (check out the Rick Resource Forum or the Alembic Club), I feel like I've hardly got anything - although I'm happy with my examples- but it's nice to have the Sei and Alembic too to round things out. I will say almost every penny I earn goes into my basses; I'm actually one of the lowest paid guys I know. It's also taken me 28 years to get to this stage. Luckily I have no kids which makes things a bit easier!

With regards to your bass trouble I'd take it to Martin to have a look. Alternatively you could always ask on the Ric Resource Forum as there are some very knowledgeable people on there.

I have a Fender jazz bass, a Fender P-bass, a 1979 Hofner Beatle bass, a 2007 5-string G&L bass, and recently found a mint-condition Rickenbacker 4003s Fireglo bass on eBay. Now I understand what all the buzz is about - the sound from the Rick just knocks you upside da head! Incredibly powerful sound, a joy to play. My band loves it. So do I!

I said over at the Ric forum and ill say it again here. Search the internet (Musican' friend for example I highly recommend cause for their return policy or pic of the rics, etc.) and get that ric in less than 2 weeks!

Being loyal to a local store is cool and all... but business is business. Seriously you could have one in less than 2 weeks.

£1200's is way better than the price you were quoted of £1700 and some of these basses are unused models from 07, but seriously dont get hung up on the year cause they are all great basses.

Nicks guitar and Bass seems like the place to search in your neck of the woods. Im sure you could get some sort of payment plan/credit card with low interest (an ebay credit card for example would be perfect for this), bank loan or personal loan etc. and get the bass you really want while building up a credit history at the same time, a win win! $200 is a perfect downpayment first payment.

I'm never offended if someone refers to me as a "limey" but I'm sure there would be some fellow Brits out there who would take offense to the term "limey bastard" :eyebrow:

To the OP:
The internet's your best bet. I like to support local stores too, but the nearest store that had a new Rick to me was a two hour drive :rollno: I ended up buying my Rick from a shop on eBay called "Rickysounds"... very friendly, reliable service. Highly recommended :D

Good luck with your hunt for a Ric.

I've put a pair of SD pickups in my Bass.
They sound amazing. Equal levels across all strings and do not affect that classic tone.
I've also bought some 500k DPDT pots to wire up the PUPs in either series/parallel or phasing.
I'm really not sure which way to go.
Has anyone else tried this and can comment?
Any help appreciated.

Cool...you got one of those early Squire models with the correct long- shaped headstock (always wondered why they changed it).
+1 on the 4000....I always liked the no-frills lean'n'mean look of them, compared to the fancypants 4001. My first bass was like your 4000, and it sounded a lot better than my 4001 (which I got because I became obsessed with having a neck pickup). The pickup on the 4000 was awesome. I took it to a guitar shop and told them to swap the bridge pups in both basses. The guy told me that wouldn't be necessary, and informed me of the cap removal mod (this was wayyy before that was common knowledge). The 4001 sounded a lot better, but still didn't compare to the 4000-- it cut thru like a knife (my drummer commented that I sounded like Yes, and he had no idea about RICs and Squire, etc., so I was pretty pleased to hear that). I eventually sold it because I didn't like the fact that it was a set-neck routed for a neck pickup, meaning only a sliver of wood was holding the neck on (the rout was as deep as the neck pocket). Later I found that most 4000 set necks were routed the same-- didn't seem very smart to me, and a luthier told me the neck was getting a hump at that location, so off she went for dirt cheap.

Strangely, I tried SDs in a couple of my Rics and absolutely hated them, thought they completely took away the natural tone. Just goes to show I guess! Different strokes and all that.
