I have always kept my pickup cover on---it has never been a problem---plus, I have since found out that the cover is intended to do some noise shielding, but it is not noticeable to the ear.

Please count me in the ranks of Rickenbacker owners. I have a '77 4001 Mapleglo. I will post a picture soon. It looks like I am #153 but I'd appreciate it if someone could confirm that.

It was stolen last year while in transit. It's Serial # MD1582
April 1973. It's got all the goodies including a RIC re-issue horseshoe p/u mounted in the original p/u surround, otherwise completely stock.
Police reports have been filed. Someone has it.

A reward will be given to anyone that can provide information that leads to its return.

Not any more! I started collecting these in early 2004 when I bought a dark burgundy 4001 very similar to Thorton's stolen one (but darker) and I thought it would be a great idea to see if I could assemble a collection of checkerboard 4001's made in the first seven months of 1973 and in varying colors. This was a time in the manufacturing of the 4001 where changes were being made on a monthly basis. Using only money made on overtime at work I have spent a collective $19,000 on seven basses with the lowest being $1700 and the highest being $3700 for an average cost of $2700. I would like to add an August someday that would probably not have checkered binding and this would show the transition to what the modern 4001/4003 evolved to. Compared to my F150 truck that I bought in 2005 for $24,000, this will end up being a better investment as it has already doubled in value in the last three years.
Sorry about your bass Thorton, I will definitely be looking for it as I follow the sales on these religiously.

Here are my current Rics, minus a 73 that's being refurbished:
'91 CS, '73 4000 (the most aggressive-sounding bass I've ever played..."you call that clank? This is clank!"), '72 4001.
