Pull the button nails out and replace them with an allen-headed set screw about 3/8" long, then put on the toaster covers. The newer high gains have allen button headed screws that are even easier to remove. This can ONLY be done on the newer (since the early 90s) plastic bobbin high gains. The earlier ones with a flat black top (not the newer 2 ridged tops) will damage the coil windings if you try to pull the poles out.

I glad someone else heard of this!! thank you for confirming,I thought I was loosin my marbles....have you done this personally? and does it effect the output of the pup?(make it weaker)..I think it was the older pup's that were being modified the way I described earlier(cutting or grinding the buttons as opposed to replacing the pole pieces)..

I have not done it to any on my pups, but I have opened up the holes for 5/16" alnico5 magnets (neck pup only!). I doubt it was the older style high gains as the coil windings are over the poles and would most likely get broken.

a(long) while back I remember a guy on the Ric fourm saying that he modifies the old style high gains(w\button pole pieces) by cutting the buttons off and using a toaster cover so you have the look but, the sound of the high gains..I like the hi-gains myself but,I do like the look and feel of the toasters(my 4008 had a toaster)..I'll have to take some good pics of my '04 jet-glo 4003 with the new black pg(from Pickguardian)and my '82 walnut 4001 and maybe get a number.

I have modified a few high gain pickups to make them look like toasters ...

Don't know if y'all heard over here in Talkbass land that RIC's making 4003's with full width inlays again. They stopped doing them back in April/May 1973 and two months after that the checkerboard binding stopped. A lot of possibilities now for reissues in the the future. I've got a May 1973 JetGlo 4001.

I got it in August 1975 and it was my first proper, quality bass. I've played regularly ever since in all sorts of bands and sessions. Although I have other basses, I keep coming back to it time and time again because it's just so versatile.

People think of Ricks as just having "that" sound (which I love BTW), but I've used mine for everything from punk to jazz fusion, even for a bit of country (yes I know, but I was really strapped for cash and the band payed well).

The only thing it's not great at is slap....but then, neither am I.
