Someone's been doing some heavy toaster exchanges---great collection.

Speaking of the toaster.....I really like the look of the toaster pickup but I'm not sure that I've heard one in a modern Rick. How difficult is the install? Just a simple drop-in?

The toaster is a drop in replacement ...

The toaster came stock on the 4003s5 basses ...

Easy install on the Toaster, and HUGE tonal difference from the stock HiGains. Well worth the hundred bucks, or whatever they cost now.

a(long) while back I remember a guy on the Ric fourm saying that he modifies the old style high gains(w\button pole pieces) by cutting the buttons off and using a toaster cover so you have the look but, the sound of the high gains..I like the hi-gains myself but,I do like the look and feel of the toasters(my 4008 had a toaster)..I'll have to take some good pics of my '04 jet-glo 4003 with the new black pg(from Pickguardian)and my '82 walnut 4001 and maybe get a number.

i'm just going back and forth in my mind... don't know whether to keep the white on, go for black, leave the pickup cover on, take it off, get one of those pickguardian things for the treble pickup or not.......

i got a walnut too, and never seen another one before.. besides mine.

have you ever thinking in changin pickup guard to a black one?

I had thought about it but,the walnut bass is semi-retired and it very rarely leaves the house so not worth the investment...I never even thought to lay the black pg on top of the white one on the walnut bass to see what it would look like. When it came in,I was so excited to put on the jet-glo that I forgot,so I don't even have a pic to show..sorry

That bass is a modified 4003s ... A firend of mine in California had a 4003s modified to look like a cross between a 4001cs and a 4008 ... Chris Squire actually owned a bass much like that in the early 70s and that is a real Chris Squire signature on that bass ...

I have never played that bass or seen it in person ... my friend sent me the pictures ...

I would be tempted to string it BEAD with octave strings and put in a bridge with 8 seperate saddles ...

But it is a beautiful bass ...

I have played and listened to that bass and it is a tonal monster. The bridge pup is a HB1 humbucker from a 4004 bass. The "potato" head headstock as it is called, is a RIC design and as Ric5 stated Squire's 8 string had that type of headstock. When Chris saw it outside the HOB in Hollywood for signing, he was caught enough to look it over pretty good and said "Nice." Again, it is a wonderful bass with a very stable 4003 neck.

Pull the button nails out and replace them with an allen-headed set screw about 3/8" long, then put on the toaster covers. The newer high gains have allen button headed screws that are even easier to remove. This can ONLY be done on the newer (since the early 90s) plastic bobbin high gains. The earlier ones with a flat black top (not the newer 2 ridged tops) will damage the coil windings if you try to pull the poles out.
