Sturmvogel - my E string was exactly the same - deathly quite, almost muted - why they let them out of the factory like this beats me. Just raise the poles under the E-string on BOTH pickups a tad with a small allen wrench and you will be fine. You have to take the bridge pickup cover off to get to the pole piece in there unless you can fabricate a special wrench. But even then, thats not hard.

I would like to suggest that the string may be "twisted" down it's length. When strung, make sure a string lays straight (no twists) from over the bridge, over the nut, and into the machine head. A twisted string will not vibrate as well and appear dead. An easy thing to check/fix.

'Kay, I have a general question for the assembled membership.

THE SITCH: I have a 4-string Fretless MIM Fender Jazz, a Fretless 5-String Michael Kelly ABG, a 6-string Ibanez SR-506, and (as of this Friday) the NS WAV4 EUB formerly belonging to TB'er "Adam on Bass".

I also have an order for a Fireglo Rick 4003 from Zzounds, which is due for delivery in June.

QUESTION: Why would you argue that I OUGHT to take delivery of the Rick?

I ask this, because I ordered it about eight weeks ago, before I got some of this other gear, and I'm just not sure what, if anything, the Rick will now contribute to my arsenal.

In short, how would you go about talking me into going ahead with the Rick adoption, given my situation?

Because it's a lovely piece of craftsmanship. Because it's one of the last American icons. Because it's the musical instrument equivalent of getting an original factory built '57 Corvette Stingray. I can name a few basses I think play better, quit a few that are easier to maintain, but there's only one Ric.
