Has anyone played both the 4003 and the 4004, and how similar are they, i am really interested in Rickenbackers but im not a huge fan of single coil sound. The 4003 really appeals to me because of the stereo outputs. Would i get the same sound if i replaced the 4003 pickups with humbuckers?

Bought a brand spankin new 2001 4003 in Midnight Blue from the Devil himself (Ed Roman).......played it heavily until 2005 then sold it for several hundred more than I paid for her ($1,064 new - sold for 1,500)
Long story short....
Picked this baby up the other day at GC:
Glad I went there on Memorial Day!!
BTW...can I have a number?? I'm thrilled to be a Ric owner again!! I had forgotten how GOOD they felt!!

It was global. He's in Japan. Great guy to deal with. Japanese freight is FAR cheaper than out of the US- cost me $150 vs. $400 or so.
I got it yesterday and had my first full band jam with it last night. NOW I know what all the fuss is about. I've always loved the Ric sound on recordings but they're a dream to play- My God the thing SINGS!
I just took it in to my bass guru- he wanted to keep it overnight with the truss rods fully loosened before levelling the frets and setting up in the morning. The suspense is KILLING ME.
A word of caution.... The truss rods on the 4001 should not be used to put the neck into backbow by themselves. Rather, the neck should be bent back slightly with a jig before tightening the rods to match. Otherwise you run the risk of stripping or bending the threads, or lifting up the fingerboard. It's a finicky process....
Dan Erlewine wrote an article in Vintage Guitar explaining the above process which was called "Rickenbacker Chiropractic". And IIRC, John Hall told me the same thing....
From what I understand, the 4003 truss rods are stronger and do fine on their own.
Thanks! The Shadow is my favorite of the limited editions, and the neck on it is spectacular. It's in the shop right now getting a transplant -- I found a black trim '86, and I'm swapping the pickups and pickguard to bring the Shadow close to stock. Black trim pickups are absurdly hard to find.
