BassKadet / BrentSimons,
I recently got a 2008 4003 that hums to distraction.
I picked up an Electro-Harmonix Hum-Debugger and it really works. The tone is still there but the hum is gone.
Yeah there was a doubleneck 6 string fretless headless carbon model with factory whammy and ivory fingerboard.

Look inside the cavity for the treble pickup and look for the little black wire with eyelet. It needs to be on one of the height adjusting screws. If it is there, it needs to be up against the metal mounting surround. If it is, while the hum is going, wiggle it and see if the hum changes. Also, make sure the shielded cables shield is connected at the bottom of the bridge pickup and also at the volume pot body in the control cavity.
Should be like this:

That might do the trick. Honestly - I've been playing Rics (seriously) since 1970-71 and I guess that I have been extremely lucky in that time. I have really never had a problem with noise....I've heard the occasional radio stationD), but never had a problem with "hum"......
I forgot to ask if it messes with your harmonics?
I went through the whole bass checking for bad grounds and shorts. I found nothing. Like I stated before my 82' 4001 never had this hum.
i have a humdebugger for my dark starred bass. it doesn't mess with the harmonics(at least not that i can tell) but it does effect the sound the slightest bit. for me it's worth being rid of the hum though, or most of it anyway.
I might have to bite the bullet on this. My Sadowsky with big singles has a little hum to it when I take the balance knob out of detent. But no where near the Ric hum. So the debugger might serve a dual purpose for me

Get it looked at professionally. Have had 3 lefty Ricks no issues, still have one and it's fine.
'08 4003 in Jetglo, can I play, too?
