I'm trying a Ric humbucker in the bridge position but just discovered the dang thing is a tad too wide to fit in the space. Do I dare have a mm or two routed away from each side to make it fit? thanks,

I think I've already killed the resale when a "good" friend recommended that I replace the original pickups years ago. This same truly good friend works now for Rickenbacker (and is wiser now, as am I) and suggested the humbucker after talking to John Hall, and then he helped me me get the humbucker. He assured me that the pickups are retro-fit, but it ain't happening

It's the only thing I haven't parted with in my adult wife - oops, I meant life (I've parted with a wife, cars, guitars, amps, jobs, etc.). So yes, I'm keeping it and will pass it on to my son.

Then go for it. I dont care about the resale on mine. I shred hard and the bass is beat but still kickin like it should

Bob, you could grind the chrome cover to make it fit. The current higain pickups use the same cover and you can get those easy enough if you decide you don't want the humbucker. Since you plan to keep the '74 forever, and if you like the HB, then it won't matter anyway.

I had a very competent craftsmen grind a few 16ths away from each side of the pickup cavity and now it's good to go. I'm wondering if I should have kept the treble pickup and replaced the bridge for brighter tone though, but I'll give this a go for now. I fear once you start tinkering, it never stops. Thanks for your input.
