You know, I THOUGHT I was missing one. This is RIC's 2001 Color of the Year Desert Gold, applied to the 4003. It's a very fine metallic gold, almost looks tan in certain light.

Just put fresh strings on my Ric, and while I was at it decided to finally remove the pup cover and try it with a Treble Bezel. What a pain in the ass. To be honest I like the way it looks better with the cover on, and for pick-style the cover works better for me. I'd really like to find a way to make an easy snap-on cover, or at least something that can be removed without having to take off the strings and disassemble half the pup assembly. I have some ideas...

In the mean time at least it's easier for fingers.

Several months ago, I took the pick up cover off of my Ric for the first time in 34 years.

I will keep it that way from now on. An amazing experience after so many years. I realize now I was always somewhat conscious of and constrained by it.

I bought the bezel and put it on. I don't remember taking the strings off, but loosening them.

I don't have it with me right now but it's possible isn't it?.....or is my memory so bad.....

I don't believe I've ever seen a JG with no binding. Makes for a very different look.

I don't like the loose strings draping across the finish while I'm working; worried about scratches. So I waited until I had to change out the strings.

Another option is to just pull the strings off the tuners and wrap them in a towel or something soft so it won't damage the finish.

Using flats, I expect to keep my strings for years. I have to come up with a solution to take the strings off and put them back on. Wrapping them in a towel or something similar is what works best for me, though.

Just closed the deal - a new used (VG condition 2 on MF) Ricky 4003FG in transit to yours truly.

I don't want to scratch it all up (like my G&L L-2000 tribute), But it will be a working bass, not a wall hanger, as I gig almost every week - I plan to use it as my primary bass.

I'm a little OCD about keeping my stuff nice and have screen protectors on my iPad (Zagg) and iPhones (other brand). I was thinking about putting a Zagg shield on the back of the Ricky but read mixed comments about other similar products in other posts. I'm concerned about the applicator fluid and use on the Ricky finish. I would also be concerned if the shield would prevent any natural aging of the finish.

Has anyone tried such a thing? What kind of finish is on the new 4003s? I read that it is not nitro, poly or cv... what is it?

it's a poly finish...pretty hard too. I wouldn't put any kind of protector on it. just play it and be careful
