I bought one of those MF MID RIC when they had their sale. Overall very happy with it. However, I've noticed the binding where I rest my arm is crackd. Kind of surprised by this because I baby the RIC.

Lets see that was in august, so 9 months back what was the build date? i am guessing its out of rics repair range of 1 year.

Ya the 4004ci basses have a wonderful mid growl. Nothing else quite like it. Wire it volume, volume, tone, or stacked knobs with 2 vol and 2 tone for better bass tone on the 4004.
Here's a recording my band just finished, featuring a 4003FL holding the low end together.
This is one of the first recordings I've done with the best band I've gotten to work with since moving to Colorado. The bass is my 4003FL, clean on the choruses and bridge and fuzzed out on the verses by way of a Black Russian. I only used the bridge pickup, a 4002 bridge pickup originally with a 1970s reissue Stingray preamp under the hood. Aphex Punch Factory lightly compresses the whole thing. A little bit of cab sound from the studio's 4x10.
I also sang over the bridge (the highest note, it's an Ab or something that made me nearly lose my voice since the engineer wanted as many takes as possible!).

I believe cracked binding would be a finish issue, or is that more structual? i guess it could go both ways
I was thinkin of leaving it as is... I sorta like the 3 way switch. Have this set up on my Gibby G3.

???? That looks like a Montezuma Brown color in the photo, but that color was made possibly into 2006 (fulfilling orders from 2003-04). But it has the walnut head wings and full-width inlays. Is it just the color in the photo? Is it really brown or is it Fireglo?

If you really enjoy your 4004C as it is, don't sweat it and leave it be. On mine, I decided to put in the concentric pots and have vol/tone for both pickups and still the pup switch and really enjoy the added tonal capabilities.
