I used a large flat screwdriver.
LOOSEN THE NUTS FIRST!
I would also clamp the end of the 'board while doing this, using thin wood or thick cardstock under and over the strings and thick cloth or leather on the back of the neck.
Just to be on the safe side!
I first tried to bend the nuts on mine up without loosening them and they felt like they were titanium or something.
Wouldn't budge a thousandth of an inch. Luckily I didn;t break anything.
Just be careful and you should be fine.
They should be parallel with the fretboard from what I understand.
Very weird that they got bent without a hamfisted attempt at adjustment (the common reason)!
Maybe over time they bend down on their own?!?
Although, my '76 4000 contradicts that supposition, at least in it's own instance. Same for my '81 4080, no bending on it either.
Anyway, good luck and let us know how it turns out.
Once they're straight and easily accessible you'll likely feel alot better about the whole situation.
P.S.: ask Joey first, again, just to be safe, if there are any other things to be wary of.

Normans Music just posted 4 new 4003 basses on Gbase.com. He's asking $1,700 shipped UPS ground (per email I recieved - price isn't listed in Gbase.com listing). He's got the 4 colors. One of them was made back in Jan of 2009. He must have been sitting on them for awhile. You might even be able to negotiate the price down. The only other 'best price' I've seen was when MF had thier 20% off sale and you could get one delivered for $1,559.99.
$800 for a Burgandyglo Rick, maybe there is hope!

Golden advice.
As to why this happened, unless you did all the setup work on this over the life of the bass, you can't be sure someone somewhere tried just tightening the rods (especially the treble side) to adjust the neck. Not pointing fingers, just 'splainin.

The 4001v63 does not have the .0047 cap in it, which is a good thing IMO.

A 4003 DCM 75th anniversary bass ( only 75 models made )!!! Immaculate look, immaculate beauty, immaculate sounding bass !!!! Feels great to own a part of the 'history' !!! The push/pull circuit is a great option too !!!
Honestly, this is such a beauty, the pictures will never do justice to the Bass !!! The gold pickguard and TRC are work of art ! This is a keeper !!!

I remember that theer was quite a feeding frenzy the day that they offered those for ordering.
It took all of an hour for all four DCM models (75 each) to be sold out!
