Ok, you all seen a jetglo 4003 before, but I might as well post anyway. This is my new baby, an 8 year old 4003.

It is in perfect condition except a previous owner seems to have loosened the binding in one of two TINY places by putting it on a stand or somthing.

Wanted this forever lol.

Hi.

I just got myself a gorgeous 1986 4001v63, it plays and looks fantastic.

Here's a pic:

It has an issue I'de like to discuss with you guys:

The truss rod nuts bend upwards (or outwards, if you prefer..), so they push the truss rod cover out of position:

Why is this happening, and what is the remedy? The neck is dead straight and plays like butter, though.

Looks like someone had to crank down on the rods to make it work. Maybe a little trip to the local luthier to have the neck warmed up so that the wood will move a bit so the rods don't have to be so tight. Also, are they bent or just standing up? If they are bent up, they can be put back down and that will fix the issue.

Yep from overtorquing or someone bent them up trying to get a regular size nut driver onto them. The rods can be taken out and bent straight again. Find a luthier that's familiar with Rics or at the RRF there's lots of tutorials for truss rod fixes.

Kind of hard to say, all I know is that the nuts push the TRC.
I'll take it to my local luthier and get an opinion.

neck is adjusted flat per Ric's recommendation.

It's flat, and seems stable. But I still would like to have operative truss rods on this one..

It looks like you have a set of D'Addario Chromes (flats) on there.

You're right, those are Chromes. My favorite strings. I believe they have a moderate tension.

It looks like that year had the 7 screw bridge, unless it was modified.

Also correct, the early v63s, I've heard, came with the 7-screw piece. A so much better solution, and I have no problem with the aesthetics..

After buying my 4001, all I want is more Rics! I'd be happy with life if all I had were Rics. They are just perfect.

Just wondering, what kinds of strings do you all use on your Ric's and what gauges?
I've been using DR Lo-Riders with a .105 E string. Sounds great.

That mg V63 is drop dead gorgeous, even with the little truss rod issue. It's the one Ric I've never owned that I wish I did. I've put a vintage RI Toaster in the neck pos of my 4003 to get closer, but it's just not the same thing. Good luck on getting the truss rods fixed, and congrats on a awesome bass.

I switched to chromes (.105 E) about a month ago on my 05 4003. I've been a roundwound guy forever, even bought the rick with every intention of stringing it with roto 66's and leaving it that way but I think the chromes are where it's at for this bass.
So articulate and punchy. Actually I wish I had another rick so I could have one with some stainless roundwounds too.
