THE SHORT SCALE BASS THREAD!

Oooops, can't forget my other classic short scale, a mint 1970 LP Bass!!!

A great sounding bass with a wonderful neck, just a bit heavy, but it can rock too.

For me, a short-scale Longhorn with flats (in my case a Jerry Jones that I adore) is part of my "if I could only keep three basses" quiver---a P, some kind of J, and the 'horn. If it wasn't the horn it would be a Hofner.
Gotta have one hollow or semi-hollow shorty IMHO, in particular with flats. It amazes some folks how when I do my "faux upright" thing, I use the littlest bass I own . . . .:)

What flats do you use on your Longhorn?

Man, you guys aren't the first to suggest I leave that finish, but I'm dying to get under it and see what's below. I sanded a little patch on the back and I think it might be an original sunburst, so I'm diving in later in the winter when I have some time!

drewfretless, that's a nice Mustang...
I've been considering a Dark Star for my Musicmaster bass. Do you experience any 60htz hum issues having just 1 DS single coil pup?
Question applies as well to anyone with a 1 DS bass... I need your help !!!

I had the Dark Star installed at The Guitar Factory in Orlando, and I do not have any hum issues period. I couldn't be happier with the sound from my DS Mustang or my DS Musicmaster pictured below. :D

Your black Musicmaster is way too cool. Bet it sounds as good as it looks. Mine is also black and very likely to be Dark Stared in the near future !!
From your pics it seems the pickup on the Musicmaster was installed a bit closer to the neck than on the Mustang (maybe an optical illusion). If that's indeed the case, which one sounds best?

From what I understand, the guys at the Guitar Factory properly intonated each bass and found the sweet spot and that is where the pickup was installed. As far as which sounds better it is hard to say. I had the MM done first and it sounds awesome, and then when I got the Mustang back, I thought it sounded better than the MM. Now that I have adjusted the pole pieces on each bass, they both have their own unique sound. If I could only keep one, I think I would have to keep the Musicmaster. I actually prefer the location of the DS on the Mustang for playability. I also use a very small piece of non slip grip tape to anchor my thumb on the pickup ring.
Your MM looks ready for the DS experience.:ninja:

I decided a few years ago that I needed a short scale fretless 8 string with a piezo/ebony bridge:

It was built by Matt at FBB and has a wenge body sandwiched between walnut with a walnut/wenge/jatoba neck. The pic above shows it with a Bart preamp which has since been replaced with an Audere. It's strung with black tapewound strings and tuned CGCG.
