I'm interested in the physics of these bad boys (but not enough to do a search). Why do you play them? What are the advantages/disadvantages over a 34"?

Physics, schmysics, I don't think we need to tread over that ground again.

I use them because they sound good, play easily, sound good, are very even sounding, sound good, are generally lighter, sound good, get the job done just as well as my long scales, and sound good.

Did I mention they sound good?

What are the options for 5-string short scale basses? I know of the birdsong, but would like to hear of other quality alternatives. Thanks.
For five-strings with a low B, there aren't many "ready made" alternatives beside Birdsong, as far as I know. There might be a few luthiers that would be willing to build such a bass for you - I think that Cliff Bordwell has built a 30" six-string tuned B-G for example - if you'd be willing to go that route.

Apart from those alternatives, the only short scale basses with a low B that I've seen is an Ibanez prototype with seven strings. But that's something completely different.

Ibanez Mikro Bass. I got it after a spine surgery and I still play it since I've healed because it's just fun!

Next up for me is probably a Mustang or Musicmaster. These short basses start to grow on you.

My camera isn't working right, so all I have are photos from the auction, and a few taken before I started fixing it.

1967 Gibson Melody Maker. 30" scale, with DiMarzio pickup and brass pickguard. $190 on ebay, received as seen, including...

FIRE DAMAGE from the third fret to the tip of the headstock. Fire damage stabilized with liberal soaking in very thin CA glue, bridge replaced with a Badass I bridge, Set of Schaller tuners I had laying around, and a six year old set of Fender flats. My first short scale ever and dear god I love it.

The mad scientist's lab in my basement is currently hatching this:

30" neck from a 67 Greco beatle bass and the body from a 2007 Epiphone Les Paul guitar, broken neck chopped off and a neck pocket routed.

Hi,

I posted this query on the main basses forum, but without any success. I'd like to buy a Dean Evo XM 30" scale bass but can only get it on line. The body looks quite small and it is light. Has anyone handled one of these and can they tell me if it suffers from neck dive?

Thanks,

Paul.
