THE SHORT SCALE BASS THREAD!

This has been a great thread. My wife's Badtz-Maru Bronco arrives next week. I'm getting some ideas about hotrodding it!

I mentioned the Badtz-Maru Bronco to my wife when I first saw it about a year ago and she said "you're getting it for Gwen, right?"

Gwen is our daughter who turns 3 in April. I'm resisting the urge because I need her to be a drummer.

Thanks to eBay, I miraculously managed to satisfy both my GAS for a shortscale and a vintage white/tort Fender. It arrived today:

CIJ Mustang reissue. Super-thumpy 60s sound and incredible fun to play! :hyper:

Very nice!

I had a Precision with that colour scheme, that I sold because I prefer shorter scale lengths. Now you've made me want to replace it with a Mustang just like yours...

Enjoy the new bass!

That would be cool to be able to jam with your own 3 year old daughter! I had a dream a few months back that my cat was a kick-a$$ jazz drummer and we would jam all day long!

Nice. She has a slew of toy instruments around, and she likes to sit and "play 'tar with daddy". This picture is from last April.

Of course, my Cortofusion fits her much better.

Nice Mustang! I played one exactly like that yesterday at GC. It played so easily and sounded really nice (It was hard to tell though with all of the noise :hmm: ). Have you found any faults or problems with yours? Also, is it possible to buy mutes for these basses like they used to put on Mustangs in the 60s?

No faults or problems at all. The D and G strings do have a slightly brighter character than the lower strings, but it´s barely noticeable. Tinkering with pickup height and replacing the cut-down heavy-gauge long scale strings with real short-scale strings should help.

Don´t know about the mutes - I don´t fancy them, the sound suits me just fine. :)

Sweet, Thanks!
Also, do they come with a case or a gig bag?

Unfortunately not. I still have to figure out what to use for the Mustang - it´s not much shorter than a full-size Fender, so a guitar bag is not an option. I have an old fake leather gig bag that does fit ok, but it´s poorly padded so I don´t really want to use it.

If I find a good one, I´ll let you know. :)

I don't think the reissue Fender Mustangs are worth the money. There are quite a few better quality short-scales available for less money, IMO.

Could you expand on that? Around $560 for a good, Made in Japan, reissue of an old Fender classic doesn't seem bad to me. The one I tried at GC was pretty nice, although it needed a setup pretty badly. What would you recommend instead?

I may have a solution for you on this one. I needed to replace the hardshell case that came with my Birdsong -- Guitar Center had a gig bag by Road Runner that is pretty darn nice. There's a lower end model that is kinda flimsy, and a higher end model that is built pretty solidly. It actually has some stiffness to it and is well padded. $60 -- well worth the cost.

I'm not sure if the reissue Mustang will work as it might actually be a bit longer in length due to the headstock. Another option would be to order a Mustang hardshell case from Fender through your local music store. Those cases are not extravagent in any way, but they are solid.

I bought the higher end Roadrunner bag and liked it a lot. For about 2 years. It has nice pockets, comfortable straps and is well padded, but now it is literally coming apart at the seams. I have used it for every rehearsal and most gigs during that time, so it has a lot of use, but my other bags - Fender and cheap ($29 at MusicYo) Tobias - have held up really well under the same conditions. I really wouldn't recommend the Roadrunner bag unless it is seeing light duty.

Well, it's a matter of preference, of course. If you think it's worth it, then for you it is. I do have a sentimental fondness for the mustang: my first bass back in the 70s was a Mustang. But the reissue model I saw at a GC seemed cheaply made.

I'd recommend a $169 Hamer Slammer for sound, playability, fit and finish over the Mustang. In the Mustang price range, I'd personally try one of the new Ibanez Artcores first.
