THE SHORT SCALE BASS THREAD!

Well, it's a matter of preference, of course. If you think it's worth it, then for you it is. I do have a sentimental fondness for the mustang: my first bass back in the 70s was a Mustang. But the reissue model I saw at a GC seemed cheaply made.

I'd recommend a $169 Hamer Slammer for sound, playability, fit and finish over the Mustang. In the Mustang price range, I'd personally try one of the new Ibanez Artcores first.

Cool, thanks.

Okay, spamming this place one more time with pics of my beloved Gretsch Thunderjet:

It's a true shorty @ 30.3" scale, but the body is chambered mahogany and the carved top is maple, and the neck is mahogany/ebony. With the handwound TV Jones pickups, the sound is bigger than anything I've ever heard.

I sold my previous one-and-only to go with this one. Why did I go short scale? Well, besides the sound and beauty of this particular instrument, it's simply more playable. Yeah, you can "get used" to 34" or 35", and the shoulder/wrist pain bigger basses often bring. And yeah, those long- and extra-long scale lengths have all the benefits of manly bragging rights. So, I think a lot of people turn away from short scales because they're percieved as either "girly", or "cheap"--I know I did for years. But the incredible sound of the Gretsch (and other great short-scales like Alembic, Birdsong, etc.) prove that there doesn't have to be a tradeoff in sound to enjoy a comfortable, playable instrument.

Sweet another Gretsch bass lover!! I'm currently looking at getting the Broadcaster as I love hollowbody basses!!

Nice. She has a slew of toy instruments around, and she likes to sit and "play 'tar with daddy". This picture is from last April.

Of course, my Cortofusion fits her much better.

As a father of a 21 year old who's away at college, I recommend that you embrace every chance that you have to make music with your child(ren). My daughter plays viola (and violin) and for whatever reason, we have never played together. I guess it was a case of her being a reader and not able to play by ear and I'm completely ear trained and can't read a note (or some other excuse). In hindsight, I feel like I really missed out on something special.

Thosr'e beautiful... more info? I have never seen those before. Are they stock?

Yes, they're stock (but I've removed the pickguards from both).

They're no longer in production but show up on eBay from time to time. Both are made in Korea...the fretless came off the production line in '99 and the fretted a year earlier. They came with a telescoping endpin so that the bass could be played as an upright (unscrew the strap peg and screw in the endpin). Fun basses to play....big booming sound with the neck mounted "mudbucker".

One of these days I'll be able to afford a real, vintage Gibson EB-1. In the meantime, these will have to do! :)

No picture yet of my little Rogue violin bass copy. Nothin special but fun, and a good value for the money. The little Slammer is a fun bass too, but compared to the custom shop B12S...well, it's sort of like the difference between a picture of Catherine Zeta Jones nude, and Catherine Zeta Jones nude. Either one will get you off, but.....

I just love the shorties, even though I've played normal scale for over 40 years.

The '80 custom shop bich at the top is gone, stolen. And I guarantee if I ever find the guy that took it, he'll go to meet his maker without his coilons.
