THE SHORT SCALE BASS THREAD!

i know pawn shop owners everywhere know very little or nothing about the value of certain instruments. but no pawn shop i have ever been into in my area has a gibson eb bass. the best i can find here is epiphone's and new gibson's. i can't afford a new one :crying: nice bass!

This was 1975. The dark ages. No internet. No Ebay, no cell
phones. Pawn shops were where you got the best used
deals. I actually called every pawn broker in the Boston
area before I found what I wanted.

Now the pawn brokers just look up the value of auctions on
Ebay. No longer any deals to be expected there.

I checked out the pawn shops here about a month ago. Their prices were ridiculous, in some case more expensive than what the instrument would have sold for new.

Here's my cool addition to this thread.... my second Birdsong that is due to be completed any day now. The control plate cover is due to get another coat of oil or two then it's time to string it up and get it ready to go. :hyper:

The entire top is from a single piece of ebony (approx 1" thick). Yes, even the lighter portions. :bassist: It's backed by blackwashed mahogany similar to what you see on the control plate cover.

That is absolutely outstanding. I had seen the pictures of the body pre-finishing, but that is just fantastic. I may be mistaken, but I believe some of the ebony leftovers from your bass top are making up the twin stripes in my new bass.

sorry - I'm geeking out about common wood origins (Ben's Cortofusion and mine are from the same plank of wood and that gets to me too).

Absolutely delightful, gents but....while Scott, Jamie, et al are working on yours they can't be working on mine ;)

Happy to hear that the wood is getting some good use. Here's a picture of the plank of ebony prior to being sacrificed for the bass Scott & Jamie have appropriately named, "Ebony Eyes". This plank was about 1" thick, 12" wide and 70" tall.

I guess this makes us cousins? :smug:

 My short-scale arsenal currently consists of 4, with a new one on order. 1. James Bass Eden; 2. Fender P-Bass Jr; 3. Epiphone Viola; 4. SX P; 5. On-order: James Bass Eden fretless. Don't know if I'll stopp here or not. Just have to wait and see.

Why do I play short-scale? I played standard 34" models, usually a Fender P-Bass, for almost 45 years. But due to arthritis problems in my hands and wrists, I found myself really hurting after about 2-1/2 to 3 hrs into a 4 hour gig. I bought the cheap SX just to experiment and see if the shorter scale would help any (a good friend recommended it to me). It helped a LOT. I can play a 4-hour gig now with no problems at all. I bought the James bass next because I had always wanted a custom, and, since I wasn't getting any younger, it was now or never. That James is the finest bass I've every owned or played. Hence my ordering of the second fretless one. I've since sold all of my 34s and play shorts exclusively now.:bassist: :hyper:

I was under the impression that you were in line in front of me. Regardless, I'm excited to know that the future owner of CortoFusion #3 is on TB - I hope you love it as much as I've loved #1 so far.

My guitarist/musical partner said the other night that he hopes we play together for a long time because the tone of the Fusion has spoiled him for other bass sounds. Of course, he's waiting on Birdsong Guitar #2 (as well as the 12-string mentioned on Birdsong's client page), so he's a touch biased.

I am not sure of the production order and, while I want my new bass (Now!), I will patiently defer to whatever works best in the Texas Hill Country. Unless I misread a prior post, it appears that 001, 002, and 003 are all represented here - a TB "hat trick."

You didn't misread. I like the word "prototype" (and I was always soloing my neck pickup anyway - so the fusion was a logical next step), and Ben likes to own #2 of as many Birdsong models as he can. I dig hat tricks.

Add to that, I believe Millard (owner of Cortobass #2 - the first that was sold) is floating around here and Mark (owner of Sadhana #1) posted much earlier in this thread. Oh - and everyone who currently has (or has ordered) a bass with the Fusion body shape is included too.

I need to stop being such a geek about this stuff, at least for a few minutes. :hmm:
