I'm sure it's been discussed already, but just how difficult could it be to replace the nut and bridge of any short-scale bass to make it a bass VI type? Assuming the neck width is suitable, and the pickups are not limited to a strict 4-polepiece design? It seems like it would be very easy and relatively inexpensive...

This is a shot of my 1962 Burns real short scale bass with standard guitar pickups.

This genuine bass was identical to the guitar version other than a stronger trem spring, larger holes throught the trem and machineheads and wider slots at the nut.
Strings were made to order in the UK

Well, on Aen of Dwarfcraft Devices fame has made a VI by combining a modified Squier Bronco neck with a regular Jaguar (guitar) body. So, it would certainly be doable for someone with the right set of skills.

Here's a video of the instrument in question:

I talked to Kurt last week about it and he was waiting on prototypes, and that he was hoping to have it for sale in February assuming that there were no issues with the prototypes. I wouldn't be surprised if it took a little longer, worth it to get a better product IMHO...its a good thing too, because I wasn't sure if I was going to be able to get it in November as originally stated because I just bought a house and am getting married soon.

Doable! for sure... my first home made bass vi was built using a kawai 30'' bass neck i got from ebay...


make sure you are placing the bridge at the right spot since if you place the bridge too far or too close to the nut bone... you may end up experiencing some intonation issues...

If you decide to build your own I'll be more than gland to provide you with assistance and or suggestions.

But many standard guitars will convert to a 6 string bass without any of the intonation problems that you get with mixing a bass neck & guitar body.
My friend has recently converted a standard down market guitar as an experiment after seeing my Burns Standard Guitar scale 6 string bass complete with whammy bar.
The biggest delay was waiting for the strings to arrive.
