I don't think the pickups sound *great* on the Hellcat, but they do the job. I've thought about changing out to a different tone pot to see if that would improve anything...probably not worth changing out the pickups anyway but a pot would be an easy try. I've been talking with Schecter Tech Support to try to resolve the hum...they've offered to take it in, which I'd rather not do if I can avoid it, but if it comes down to it I will...it still picks up more hum than my other guitars even after shielding...I've narrowed it down to the guitar itself...no level of cable/amp/effect changing/removing has made a difference.

Maybe, but the Hellcat uses a .022 cap and 500K pots, so it already passes a lot more treble than the Bass VI's electronics, for instance. I'm more inclined to think it's fact that the pickups are humbuckers rather than single coils (in split mode they sound brighter, but they're really low output).

But since they're humbucking (unless you engage the coil split), kslight, they shouldn't really hum or require extra shielding. Could just be a bad solder joint on a ground wire or something, which any competent guitar tech should be able to handle.

Point taken although to me all these basses seem to be long scale compared to the genuine guitar scale 1962 Burns Split Sound 6 string Bass the first of which I owned from 63 to 69 and the second I owned until March this year with the strings being made to order at the address I posted recently.

Mine was a subtle variant by Beltone and actually had a whammy bar on it. The strings were SO close together, I used to use a hard felt pick (remember the white ones? Whatever happened to them?).

Anyway, just cruising this thread to see if anybody had that copper-toned Beltone that I had.

The neck on my 62 Burns 6 string bass was narrower than the neck on our guitarists Strat.
The Burns also had a whammy bar as it was in reality a modded version of their Split Sound Guitar and brought out in answer to Fender's Bass VI

If that IS a full 30" scale neck, I'd love to hear more about it! The above Warmoth necks don't require you to reposition your bridge, but the Squier above has clearly had its bridge moved.

Hopefully, decuchi2334 will chime in with more info. Apparently, he hasn't visited TB since 03-01-2009, so he probably missed the comments in this thread.

Sorry I didn't comment on this earlier. I changed my username to match the one I use in other forums, and haven't really kept up with this thread. The neck I used was a ss bass neck. I dowelled and veneered the headstock. The redrilled for guitar tuners. I went back later and painted the headstock to match. I still play it often. I was going to build another using one of rondo's short scale necks, but I think the nut is to thin to be comfortable. I'm currently working on getting the scratch for a bass VI body and neck. I may have found a local builder who can build them in my price range. Got my fingers crossed.
