Hellcat VI owners: does it come with flatwounds? Doesn't say on the Schecter website as far as I can tell. If it doesn't, which flats work? I've got TI flats on my 5-string and I like that sound, especially on the A, D and G.

To anybody who has a Hellcat VI: did you get a chance to play it before you bought it? I could get one on the internet or order one from a store, but I can't find any store with one in stock (near Nashville).

I have a Hellcat...and I am not sure if flats would work well with this kind of guitar... I guess it depends on how you intend to play. I think of it as a lead instrument, and in my band I play it instead of guitar... I think the guitar can get a little muddy without the help of flats if you plan on playing chords. I like flats only for a true bass purpose...and I never use the Hellcat as only a bass.

I did not have the opportunity to play it before I bought it, but I recognized a need for an instrument like this when writing with my band. It started out with my putting down the guitar and writing leads on my 4 string, and decided from that moment on that I needed a bass VI of sorts (because chords/leads are somewhat difficult for me to play on a normal long scale bass...). It took awhile to track one down new but I eventually found one in stock. I had thought about buying one for a long time, but never had a true purpose for it before. As we don't have a bassist (roles traded off back and forth between keys and I) I have a lot more room to play with sonically and thought that a VI would serve me better than just a baritone.

I use my Hellcat as a bass, and it does well in that role. I think flats would sound good on it. I've thought about trying them, but haven't been playing it much lately.

I thought of tuning that way too, it would be easier for basslines, but it would make chords harder for those of us used to guitar. I think you might want to go with lighter gauge strings for the C and F if you do so you don't have too much tension.

It's a fair question. For years I've been a fan of the six-string bass as used by New Order, the Cure, and the Cocteau Twins. The Hellcat VI was the first six-string bass within my reach so I had to get it - I bought one as soon as they came on the market.

If you're going for a New Order-type thing, I'd recommend you stick to rounds and EADGbe, that's what he uses.
