Congrats! I have a new(er) 2012 SR705 as well. They're such nice looking, and nice sounding basses.

I try to be an open-minded, fair person. But the more I get to know my SR1200, the more I drink the Ibanez kool-aid. Burn the heretics and their non-Ibanez basses. The Premium line provides amazing value for the money. I can play along with my favorite bands like Opeth and Tool, but man can this thing get some awesome jazzy tones. Instead of just driving the beat it can really stand out with the rest of the music too. I don't have to dial this bass in because every turn of the knob or flick of the switch reveals a new playable tone.

FWIW, I also once had an AS73 semi-hollow guitar. Man that was an awesome jazz-box. I put some overwound Stew-Mac Golden Age pups in it, and it became a foot stompin' and fire-breathing blues axe. My experience with that guitar and my SR300 and SR305 that I had tells me that Ibanez makes some really good budget products. But man the Premium series is where it's at for me.

They do look as nice as they sound and visa versa.

I'm a Rickenbacker/Jazz Bass/Wal guy but I needed a good 5'er that was under $1K.
At first I wanted the SR605 but I guess it is unavailable now.
Maybe there are a few scattered across the country but it became obvious that I probably wasn't going to get one.

I tried a lot of other 5's but I always came back to the Ibanez.
Hey, I'm no Gary Willis (who is anyway?) but if Ibanez is good enough for that bass monster, then it's good enough for me.

I'm hoping the neck is straight and the top is real nice. When I ordered it last night, the girl I was speaking with (GC Highland Park, IL) said the distribution center had three in stock.

Now, I have no idea how the bass is chosen but I asked for a real nice top/grain but most importantly a straight neck. Hopefully someone gets the memo..

1997 SR800 string recommendations?

I think it has Ernie Ball rounds from GC when I bought it a few months back.

I like these strings okay....just wondering if you folks have compared these strings to others on SR800, possibly even flats?

I like Fender flat SS 9050's on my other basses.

Good idea, that's what I was thinking too!

The SR800 is my only active bass with the kind of EQ adjustment available.

I admit I have not spent much time with the SR800 EQ wise...mainly set flat but wow, the bass and treble EQ seem very good/useable on the SR800.

I guess I would like to know what some of you folks fav strings are on the SR800 after trial and error with many sets?

I definitely plan on keeping this bass, so buying 2 more set of strings in addition to the EB rounds presently on the bass is something I look forward to actually!

I want to make sure I am getting the full variety of tones available with the active P/J setup and EQ adjustments.....then maybe settle on 1 set of strings?

The 2-over-3 design is said to give a less floppy B-string because of the longer amount of string from nut to tuner.

Picked up my first Ibanez last nite,a SR1400TE I ordered from GC,not too happy with the quality.The truss rod cover isn't cut off squarely,look how far off from parallel to the nut it is and how rough the cut is.But the most bothersome thing to me is on the upper horn it looks like they sanded down too far and some of the dark layer under the maple shows thru.I have a week to decide whether to send it back or keep it.There is supposedly one more in the warehouse,I've got no experience w/Ibanez,is this normal or unusual? If I have the other SR1400TE sent here will it have it's own issues or almost certainly be better? Thanks for any input/advice!!!!

That should not have passed quality control except as B stock or been refinished. The veneer showing isn't great, but the nut is terrible and you shouldn't accept it. If I saw that on a 300 series I would return it, never mind on a 1400. Ibby QC is normally top notch so this is a surprise.

I would return it in person to a store and ask for another one that is "new in the box". They can find you another bass that is new in box from another GC as well.

I have bought brand new Ibanez Premiums from Guitar Center and I have also bought factory 2nd Ibanez premium basses and couldn't tell the difference and none of mine had any imperfections quality wise. In all honesty my Ibby 1805 2nd was the best looking and playing bass I've ever owned with the exception of my Prestige bass.

That nut placement is simply unacceptable, and this is NOT typical Ibanez QC by any measure. Get a refund, and go through Sweetwater. They have pics of the actual basses for sale, and are a great company. They also perform a 55 point evaluation before anything goes out the door.



EDIT: While you're at it - check out the SR1400 in the new deep ocean flat finish at Sweetwater.

Could your explain in detail how the direction the "A" string's tuner faces affects the tension of the "B" string. :help:
Given the primary difference between 2/3 and 3/2 arrangement is the direction the tuner button of the "A" string faces, your explanation just doesn't make sense from a mechanical or musical standpoint. The overall length of all stings remains fix by the relationship of bridge to nut (commonly refereed to as scale length). I understand how pitch, scale length, and type/size of string can affect string tension. I currently own basses that are virtually identical except one is a 2/3 and one is a 3/2, the "B"string along with every other aspect of the playing experience is identical. Tone is different due to different electronics.:bassist:

I've never heard of Ibanez shipping/selling a factory B stock instrument. What I have heard, is they never allow B stock items to leave the factory. I could be wrong and what passes QC might vary slightly from inspector to inspector. But Id return this specific bass, it isn't up to Ibanez standards however it happen.
