I've got a question for all of you SR guys and gals. Does anyone own, has anyone played an SRT?

I own a SR405QM and a Czech-made Spector Rebop 5 string and love both for different reasons. The Ibanez SRs have my favorite necks and the Spector has the arched top/scooped back body and great tone from their EMG PUPs but the neck is a little thicker than I like (it's worth it for the tone). The SR plays like a dream but the tone is a little thin, especially at volume.

I'm strongly considering buying an SRT either 805 or 905 because they seem like they be the best of both worlds for me. Arch top, scooped back, neck-through, EMG active PUPs, SR neck contour...

Has anyone played one? If so, how was it? It seems they've discontinued the SRT line, but there are still some available out there. Unfortunately, no guitar shop anywhere nearby has one for me to actually play/try out before I buy so I'll be going in blind (something I haven't done since I started playing bass 25 years ago). I'm hesitant to spend $800-$1000 on a bass I've never played personally, even for a few minutes in a guitar shop.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

The neck is definitely thicker on the SRTs. According to the Ibanez website it is 2mm thicker.

Also, I sincerely doubt that they have discontinued the line because it's still listed on their website. Usually if they discontinue a model you won't see it on the site anymore.

For reference, here's the neck thicknesses of each soundgear bass (thickness at 1st fret followed by thickness at 12th fret):

SR:
19.5mm
21.5mm

SRA/SRX:
21mm
23mm

GSR:
21mm
22mm

SRT:
21.5mm
23.5mm

I did an A/B comparison between a 5-string soundgear and a 5-string GSR and that difference of 1.5mm at the nut was enough to make it uncomfortable to play there. So, if you don't like a thicker neck, the SRT may not be for you.

Thanks for the reply, KR. I can guarantee you that 2mm difference is still thinner than my Spector by a good deal. How was the tone?

I have an SR905 which is the predecessor to the SRT line. Neck is very comfy. Mine has Barts and is very versatile and has some great tone. Obviously the SRT line is going to have that EMG sound and from the clips I've heard of them, can hold its own against a Spector.

And yes they are being discontinued. Whether its just the finishes or they're changing models or killing off the SRTs entirely, we'll find out after NAMM

Hi all, new to the thread so I thought I would say.....sup to all the Sr players here. As soon as I can figure out how to send a picture I will. Its a sr305 in the sparkle blue with a maple board. I have already upgraded the tuners to Gotoh Gb707 like on the prestige models and also a custom brass nut so far. It sounds killer through an Egnater Tweaker and Eden 15........lots of growl!!!!!!

The bass I played was a GSR, not an SRT, I was just saying that if a GSR's thickness was too much for me, then the SRT would probably be way too thick for me. Meaning it could possibly be too thick for you. The SRT is about 15/16ths of an inch thick at the nut. While the SR is about 3/4ths (or 12/16ths) of an inch thick. Not sure of the thickness on the Rebop.

But yeah I haven't heard the tone yet. Sorry. :hmm:
