I've seen some TB discussion on how the BH2 seems on the darker side of the tone spectrum. I generally agree with that - and it makes sense since the BH2 pickups are wired in Series rather than parallel. Some TB'ers have re-wired them in parallel and seem to be happy with the results, while others like myself find the preamp voicing options quite sufficient if you find you want slightly more high end & overall output from the stock pickups. I've bounced back & forth on the voicing mod and find I like the tone I get from the BEQ3 output a little better. It works better for my tastes & through my current gear.

So yours was using the VM3 from the factory? Mine came using the other, the one you're using now, the BEQ3....

Huh, that's very interesting. I wonder if Ibanez has a default setting regarding these ports or if it's just pure preference on the assembly line?

But yes - mine came from the factory on the VM3 port - I had to manually move mine to the BEQ3 side.

I found the VM3 port to sound a little hyped in the upper midrange and could use a little more treble for my taste.

Moving it to the BEQ3 took care of both of those things for me, so that's were I plan on leaving it permanently parked.

Happy Friday all,

I've had my SRMS805 for almost exactly 8 weeks now, I've had it at many practices but looking forward to taking it out for its maiden gig voyage tomorrow night.

This will be with one of the two bands I'm in that does rock/pop covers - everything from 90's stuff to current. So, should be right in the wheelhouse for an Ibanez Soundgear - looking forward to it!

Tha would be interesting to know.... knowing what little about it that I do, I would have thought it might be used as sort of a tone shift?, to have certain models sound a bit differently?, for whatever reason.

For example, you said yours sounds a bit more treble-y now - maybe mine was one that was intentionally set at the beq3 plug, because of the whole "Ironlabel" thing?
Kind of stacking brightness & treble multiple ways, with a brighter/more treble-y EQ, stainless strings (yours are too though, yes?), and the Ebonol fretboard, etc......dunno - maybe it is just what whoever was doing the install felt like that day

But I like the sound I'm getting, so, not changing :)

Not sure what the reasoning is behind the 2 differently voiced output ports on the preamp control module. I definitely have never encountered a preamp that allows for 2 differently voiced outputs eminating from the main preamp board itself. I 'assume' it's to accomodate the different brands of pickups that they are using lately (Nordstrand, Bartolini, very different sounding brands) without having to design seperate preamps to get the best tone out of each. Basically, one preamp designed to work with a couple different brands of pickups they currently use in their lineup. If that's their game plan, then I think it's pretty clever.

When I first got the SRMS805, I felt it was a little on the dark side of the tone spectrum. I bounce between nickel & stainless steel strings - so I thought I might try some stainless steels on them to gain some more treble. But then I remembered some TB discussion about the voicing options and decided to try moving the port to the BEQ3 position. That did trick, and I have been using only nickel wound strings so far. It's sporting a brand new set of nickel wounds for tomorrow's gig. I'll save the stainless set for another day.

BTW, I'm digging the IronLabel - it's kinda like a Stealth SRMS!

even the headstock logo gets the blacked-out treatment.....

Definitely suits my preferred aesthetic of "not very fancy" - for most things, anyway. Like my truck - it's a Tradesman, just a (mostly) basic model.

just a shame it's not red, or red-like.......

edit: just looked up the strings installed per Ibanez - D'Addario EXL170-5SL - turns out, they're nickel....:wideyed:

To my knowledge, and I could be wrong, the BEQ3 is meant for basses with the 3 way mid frequency selector switch, and the VM3 is for basses with the rotary variable mid sweep control, such as the EHB bass series. I personally prefer the 3 way selector switch for ease of use.

That's what I had seen when I started doing research about the two options....but afaik, the srms805 (like @stingray69 has) has the 3-way switch, same as my srms625ex......but his came set up with the VM3.

No worries - IDK why mine came set on VM3, it was a brand new instrument - not preowned.

Nonetheless, I got it sorted out thanks to the knowledgeable crowd in the Soundgear Club!

Very grateful for y'all!

Follow up to a gig last night with my SRMS805 - it was absolutely killing it in the tone dept! The clarity of the extra scale length really shined at gig volume, ran through a couple of 15" cabs w/tweeters. Clear, deep & punchy! I ran the Ibanez through my Zoom B6 using a patch consisting of SansAmp bass driver (for main tone) and a DarkGlass B3K emulation for songs that required overdrive/distortion. Brutal tone - and I mean that in the best of terms! :bassist:

We talk tone all of the time here at TB and I love the way Ibanez cover so many tones with a fairly consistent (varying between models on lines) ergonomics, but they also do some of the best finishes anywhere and looking at that bass again I just love it.

+1

They always use great looking wood combos, for sure.

Not sure if they've ever used stained Poplar Burl before in the past, but I sure hope they keep using it for a while going forward. :bassist:
