I won't use stain because I have read that Poplar can sometimes be challenging to stain evenly. So, I'll just tung oil it all.

Luckily, I didn't have any filled knots or chunks of filler in the body. If you strip it down and don't like what you see, just pink a nice vintage color and go with that. Man, imagine one these in olympic white or fiesta red with a tort guard. :)

Now you said you put Rotosounds on.

Are they the RS77 short scale set ?

Would you be so kind as to measure the wound length of the E string and post the info ?

Then we can compare it to several other popular makes and models of strings, to see which of them will fit as well as yours do.

And if you have time to take and post a closeup pic of the headstock and strings at the tuner posts, that could be valuable too.

I am likely to try the Fender hi mass bridge (their version of the Badass design). As far as I can tell, it'll lengthen the string span the same amount as the Kickass bridge, but won't sit so close to the back edge of the body, which I think will look better. It's also cheaper.

However, if the Rotosound flats that I've ordered fit on there ok with no issues then I'll probably just leave the stock bridge as it is.

For anyone living in the USA, I found a better price, $53.58 Net USD, if you are into a black version of the KickAss.

It's a 3rd party seller though, fulfilled by Amazon.com, and is less cost to me than ordering thru Amazon.ca in this instance.

Including shipping and import fees into Canada, I believe that I could get this for about $92 CAD.

But do I have a bass on which I'd want/need to install it ? :laugh:

Hi guys,I just purchased my new Mini P from Guitar Center.He said they had 100 in stock at the USA werehouse FYI,I want to put a black pick guard on my mini ,does anyone know if that is available yet from any parts distributors?.Or,will a regular p bass pick guard fit the mini?probably not ,but im just asking.Thanks

This guy in the UK makes them. They're on Ebay. I guess shipping might make it a little expensive, but they are made specifically for this bass.

I just got one in aged white. Perfect fit and looks great. I'm putting a video and some photos together of my mods soon.

Well it's good to have this information to be aware, but I personally have never had a badly fitting pickguard from that seller and I've ordered several in the past for different guitars/basses.

Here is mine with the new pickguard and my workaround "mod" while I decide if I want to spend the money on a hi mass bridge (to make the flatwound E-string fit better).

Just a thought. If you add the High Mass bridge (either the Hotshot, or the Fender) it really helps balance out the guitar on your strap more evenly. Plus, it adds a lot of extra sustain. The Hotshot version is longer, and gets pretty close to the back edge of your bass (although I don't mind because it uses more of the string in the process)

I just cancelled the GOTOH's and ordered a set of GROVERS (which actually cost less), because
I discovered those particular GOTOH tuners now utilize PLASTIC PEGS (painted to look like Chrome!)

I have Chromes on my Mini and the E string only does 1/4 wrap on the peg. It's a non-issue IMHO.

With hindsight I should have sent the seller a message to remind them about the fit problem previously discovered on TalkBass …

Anyhow, the first pickguard I received was fine - and looks OK.

I have learned - the hard way :) - that there is more to it than that.

Not just flats, but Any string design that - is too thick, or, too stiff. Many strings work cut and wrapped, and some do not. But even a regular round wound, if it is too thick or too stiff, has the potential of breaking after cutting and wrapping around the post.

The two replacement sets I am using that work fine are:
- DAddario Half Rounds, 100-45
- GHS Round Core Bass Boomers, 100-45
