I made a video of my work-around mod for the flatwound E string, but I have already taken it off because it turned out that it wraps around the tuning peg with no issues... so far anyway.

Here is my video with my sloppy playing. For the record I think I might actually prefer the original round-wound strings, but I'll stick with the Rotosound flats for now to see if they grow on me.

I’m in sunny England.

Before Brexit - I paid €52 (euro) (about US $60.49) for Pyramid Chrome-Nickel Flatwound Strings for Fender Mini P Bass

I also paid the same price for the tapewound set - .055 .075 .095 .112

The price included delivery from Germany to England.

Since I made my purchase Pyramids prices have gone up 5%.

I communicated in English with Pyramid via [email protected]

In fact it was Max Junger who responded Max Junger

Pyramid asked for a few measurements - we then double checked the measurements, I then received a pro-former invoice via email - which I paid via PayPal. The process was very simple.

Delivery took 17 days to my door.

The tapewound stings are not as smooth as D'Addario tapewound bass strings - but the Pyramids also sound deeper. There not a lot of top end range.

Stiffness - they are certainly not the stiffest strings I’ve played, but their not quite as flexible as the D'Addario tapewounds I have on a Fender Mustang PJ bass.

As I commented on your YT vid, my Pyramid Gold flats wrap around the peg as much as yours do without the extension and I've had no trouble with them for over 20 years.
Your mileage may vary.

Now THAT is how bass strings SHOULD fit ! :thumbsup:

Fortunately, my shortest scale basses are all 30", so I do not have to search as far for strings, though choosing custom gauges might still be a motivation to go the bespoke route.

One is a Hofner Ignition Club bass, though LaBella regular short scale strings fit it - I measured it before ordering them - DR short scale strings also do, and those in rounds were on it when I bought it.

My 3 others are each much like a typical Fender bass, with top/bridge loading string anchoring, one of those 3 being a Squier Jaguar Short Scale.

Since we're on the subject of strings again, I used Ibanez Mikro strings + generic (Stagg) nickel roundwound, which are easily available off the shelf, and inexpensive.

The Mikro strings (.045/.065/.085/.105) are pre-cut for a Mikro, which makes the G string too short for a Mini. Since it's a .045 nickel roundwound with no taper, any plain .045 nickel roundwound will work, be it D'adario, Fender, Stagg, whoever.

Also, the strings are not the same strings that come stock on a Mikro. Allegedly.

OK Mini P fans. Since we're talking about strings, I have an update on a teaser that I posted a few months ago. The fine folks at LaBella have purchased a Squire Mini and have, for the benefit of Mini P fans everywhere, developed a few sets of customs strings for the Squire Mini.

They recently made some 760FMs (pictured) and 760FS wound at 31" and are testing them today. So far so good, per the feedback I've received from LaBella. Once the sets are finalized, they will be made available via the LaBella site at Link Removed (if you're not familiar with the Roadie Club, this is where LaBella offers special runs or limited product sets - they offer variations on there tape wound bass strings here, although I've yet to grab a set, as they tend to go quickly).

Personally, I'm thrilled to have a choice of production strings from a reputable company, and I'm also thrilled that they were so willing to accommodate the Talkbass community. I'll share more as I'm able to get updates and additional info.

Whether I own a Mini-P or not, I'm impressed that they would do this ! :woot:

BTW, at 31" of wrap, they should also fit the Ibanez Mikro and Jackson Minion, I reckon.

That said, did you notice that the gauges of the two sets which they DID propose and prototype are leaning toward the heavier choices of already tooled gauges which they currently make ? - FM [45-105] and FS [49-109]

IIRC, there are two lighter sets, FL and FX, and only one heavier, I forget the letter code for it.

That decision [working from existing gauges, and only those choices] does several things :

1) makes wrap length the only change in their tooling,

2) suits them to better maintain adequate tension for the extra short scale, which in turn

3) minimizes the intonation instability and 'note warble' issues reported by many folks, even sometimes on 30" scale basses.

And considering that they must want players to be satisfied with their products, they most likely see the choices in the same manner that I explained.

I doubt that they just rolled the dice on this. ;)

They must love you more than me. I tried to get them to run a new batch of medium-scale white gold tapes, and even had a dozen sets pre-sold for them. But nope, they were not interested.

What strings are hte 760s? They look like typical flatwounds.

Well...to be clear....I don't know anyone at LaBella and (while I do like their strings) don't have any professional connections over there - I can't claim any super powers or persuasion. :D However, to be honest...I did used to own/operate a boutique bass specialty shop and I know the industry a bit, I've worked in corporate/IT/consultative sales, I usually don't take "no" for answer and find ways to respectfully/creatively follow up/work around, and sometimes you just have to find the right person on the right day and explain why what you're asking for is in THEIR best interest and no your own (which I tried to do here).

I think that LaBella should be applauded and supported for going down this path for the TB community. I'm also hopeful that their sub 30" scale sets (which will be appealing and applicable to basses outside of the Mini P) will also mean that this is a financially successful side project for them and a builder of good will with TBers. This should be a win/win/win, as I see it. :thumbsup:

AFAIK, 760 is LaBella's general stock number for most of their Flatwound bass strings, and some of their Nylon covered as well.

Then :
F = Flatwound

G immediately after the F means the Gold series.

The next letter tells the gauge :
S = Standard
M = Medium
L = Light
X = Extra Light
M without the F before it [760M] = Heavy, aka 'Original'

Then, a dash, followed by the scale length :
S
M
L
XL
and maybe XS, if the prototype strings for the Mini-P [etc] become official. :cool:

5 and 6 string sets have another dash, and either B or CB after.

Or for Thru Body sets, TB is at the end.

That's most of it. :)
