I'm watching the Orville and they were talking about how money doesn't exist any more because they can creative whatever with replicators. It's pretty much the same thing in Star Trek. Humanity's values changed and the unification of mankind and such other but there's no want or need for money.

So I wonder how that works. They've never really gone into it. Who decides where you live and what kind of place do you have? Regular people not in Starfleet seem to have jobs but what if they don't wanna work? What if they wanna do nothing all day. Wander the streets and make fart noises and funny faces at people. Do they get an apartment and a replicator from the Federation?

I have heard reference to replicator & transporter credits in some episodes--and the Ferengi still have a monetary system.
They've been inconsistent about whether or not they use money on Earth. I don't think they do but most other places seem to. On DS9 Quark charges latinum for drinks and gambles with it but the Starfleet officers who live there aren't being paid. I don't think they're paying rent for their quarters. And Starfleet maintenance does repairs for Quark's bar and holosuites. It's weird. And then on the promenade there's the replimat, which is like a little cafeteria area where you get replicated food and drinks and sit down to eat and that looks like it's free. Quark charges but there's no kitchen in the back. He's just replicating stuff too. Anyway. I don't know.

There are heaps of things about S.T. that if you think about it enough you'll find flaws, sometimes big ones.
I witness it almost daily on the S.T. FB groups, but 100 fold on Discovery fanpages.

Once upon a time I was the same way, and often got told I think too much.
I still do think too much (obsess) about things that matter to me, like my gear, but...

Whether or not the S.T. writers thought about how currency was or wasn't handled is not one of those things :smug:

However, I'll bet there is at least one novel out there that goes into detail about how the "we don't get paid" system works.
If you're on one of the large FB groups, just ask & I'll bet someone knows.

Quark's bar also has gambling...

I watched the original series - mainly because, with no cable or anything at the time - and a Trekkie for a sister (who always got what she wanted), I didn't have a choice. Except to just go outside and sit on the porch or something. Which, about 2/3's of the way through the 2nd season, is what I did. While I can appreciate (and admire) the social message Gene Roddenberry was espousing, I don't like being preached at. And Star Trek got awfully preachy... Just as a Sci-Fi TV show? I have to say that, IMO, it wasn't much better than

which was my favorite, as a kid. Which may have been the trouble; by the time Star Trek came along, I was too old and jaded to appreciate it... As for all the other iterations? I watched just enough to tell myself "Same S**t, Different Day", and watched something else. Or went outside; my ex-wife was a rabid Trekkie, too...

I have now watched all of the first season, and almost half of the second season of Enterprise. This show is much better than I realized. I actually consider it my 3rd favorite. Here is my current ranking:

1. TOS
2. TOS Movies
3. Enterprise
4. TNG
5/6. Tie: DS9/Voy
7. TNG Movies
8. The Orville
9. Discovery
WAY BENEATH THIS:
10. JJ Abrams Trek
