They beamed into Soji’s apartment and put a bag over her head to knock her out. They beamed in. They could’ve beamed her out of the room into a force field. But then there wouldn’t be a martial arts fight and knife throwing.

That scene was ridiculous.
Edit: It seems we’re largely in agreement about many of the show’s specific flaws, of which there are plenty. But I refuse to give up on it. It’s what we’ve been given and I accept it.

You could pick apart almost every single Star Trek episode ever made, with few exceptions. I still love the show (TOS), and watch it every night. In a way, it's actually fun to pick out the flaws.
Picard and Discovery have more to pick apart than any other series. The first six series weren’t perfect but we could go scene by scene in Alex Kurtzman’s Star Trek and everything is wrong. The first scene of Discovery was two officers on a mission to violate the prime directive. The first scene of Picard was baddies in motorcycle outfits attacking an android with a black cloth bag. Not that I’m saying Encounter at Farpoint was brilliant.

Well here’s a question for you. Would you prefer that these shows didn’t exist? Or can you make peace with them, as flawed as they may be? They are what we’ve been given and that’s that.
Yes. A thousand times yes.
No peace. I’ll watch it though. CBS or paramount or whoever is gonna own it, free trials are easy to fenagle. It’s technically Star Trek. I have to watch it.
We just watched Encounter at Farpoint this week, as The Next Generation just reset and started from the beginning again. It was horrible. I remember watching those first two episodes when the series was originally aired. That episode, and the one following (remake of the Naked Time) put me off the show, and I stopped watching with great disappointment. I am only now catching up with the rest of the episodes. So far, I think I like maybe three of the episodes, out of the entire series.

I’m perfectly happy to pay Paramount+ and the actors portraying characters I love a trivial and very nominal amount for their efforts. The beauty of most streaming platforms is you’re only on the hook for a month. You can drop out at any time.
Edit: You aren’t willing to pay $5 to watch the show after all episodes have dropped? Fascinating. No comprendo. It’d be really depressing if people did that with music too.

I’m not into the lore 
of Star Trek as much as a lot of people. I’ve only ever seen a few episodes of TOS and a couple of the original casts movies. I do have a paperback somewhere that did a synopsis on each of the episodes of (I think) TOS & TNG.
I’ll keep watching the new series and movies recognising they aren’t necessarily top shelf Trek, but some Trek makes my world a bit better than no Trek at all.
Someone mentioned the Marvel movies? Yep, no surprise it is the ‘big moments’ and ‘big explosions’ I think that draws the crowds. Like it or not that is the competition, maybe even the price of entry.

The money thing is trivial for me. I'm just not willing to give up so many hours of my linited time on this Earth watching something that doesn't just bore me, but also insults my intelligence.
I truly enjoyed watching TNG and tuning in to a new episode as it originally aired each week. I even enjoyed watching reruns of TOS when the opportunity came.
I really tried to like the other ST spin offs and gave each one of them a chance, but decided that they weren't worth watching. I dutifully watched every TNG movie but only when they were released as DVDs, so they got their money out of me. Fine.
When Patrick Stewart announced he was doing Picard, I was optimistic that it would be really good, because I respect Stewart so much.
He had vowed that he would never do ST again, yet he agreed to do Picard because when the idea was pitched to him, he was so darn impressed with it that he eagerly jumped at the chance. I naturally figured that if Stewart had completely changed his mind based on the strength of the concept, then how could it possibly be bad.
I gave it a chance. But, no. I can't justify investing any more time in it in the irrational hope that it will somehow, suddenly become good.
It's interesting that you mention music, because that's what I do with a lot of my discretionary time -- play music. Every hour that I'm not watching some drivel on a screen is another hour that I can play my bass.
The most sensible point in the entire thread. The entire first season of TNG is far and away the worst Star Trek ever made. But it got much, much better!
The first season of Discovery just plain made me angry. Season Three? Fairly entertaining.
Context: I once had a friend remark that a relationship with a certain woman I was seeing was a no-go because she didn't like Star Trek.
This woman was beautiful, sophisticated, fun and seemed to live to please me, sexually speaking.
Man, I can watch Star Trek by myself.
Beats doing what he was doing by himself.

That would explain why I've seen folk who look like them in current shows. Just figured they were distant relatives.
