Discovery does not feel like Trek to me. I've tried to like it, but it is terrible. I love the old treks and Picard. But Discovery doesn't feel like trek at all. Regarding the next post, yes, Paramount is likely to keep all the treks on its service in the future. All content providers are hoarding their titles now. It is ruining streaming. Who wants to subscribe to 10 services to see favorite shows?

I enjoyed the storyline of Discovery Season 1, even if it twisted cannon a bit. Klingons make everything better! But I couldn't begin to tell you about the storyline for the last few seasons and I watched them!

It all depends on how you're counting. Do only TV series count? No new ST came out between 1970 and 1972, 1975 and 1986, 2006 and 2016), so it sits a ways lower than DW, methinks. If we add the movies, the '79-'86 and '09-'16 years can be added back to Trek (but Dr Who too had at least one TV movie in the Nineties). The two franchises are definitely comparable in terms of longevity.

Well said!! Interesting to observe that these two series show that science fiction has serious longevity on TV.

Both are also full of examples in oath media--from fan fiction & films to licensed novels & comics, etc.

Both have a very devoted fandom.

But if I could only watch one--it would be Star Trek.
But there are good things about Doctor Who as well.

My family recently got Paramount Plus so I’ve been watching TOS. I’ve only made it through the first season, but besides a few “finding their stride” episodes towards the beginning of the season it has been really good! It’s definitely a product of it’s time, but some of the stories are great. Definitely worth a watch if you’re even vaguely interested it Star Trek.

Fizzbin rules:

• The game can be played with a standard Earthdeck of cards, despite the slightly differing deck on Beta Antares IV.
• How many players can take part is not specified, but four is apparently the usual number. Judging from the way Kirk dealt the cards, dealing always progresses clockwise.
• Each player gets six cards, except for the player on the dealer's right, who gets seven.
• The second card is turned up, except on Tuesdays.
• Two jacks are a "half-fizzbin."
• If you have a half-fizzbin:
  • A third jack is a "sralk" and results in disqualification, however if the jack is dealt on progress towards a royal fizzbin, it is considered a very lucky hand;
  • One wants a king and a deuce, except at night, when one wants a queen and a four;
  • If a king had been dealt, the player would get another card, except when it is dark, in which case he would have to forfeit that card.
• The top hand is a "royal fizzbin," but the odds against getting one are said to be "astronomical." Spock admitted, "I've never computed them."

We watched Picard last night. It was mildly entertaining. Everyone is old.

I watched Picard as well, I wasn't expecting much as the last season was meh...but I found myself really enjoying it, the writing, directing, acting and special effects have my hopes up for this season.

I dreaded this season because all of the previews led me down the road of "orange man bad" since they have to go back to current time period and "fix" something to prevent the more and more comical dire predictions of "global totalitarianism". I got bad news for them, we're living it.

And with that, I'll shut up, I know politics are a no-no.

I watched the first ten minutes of Picard. Flirting with the new actress who plays his housekeeper? Body guard? And I saw his speech all about himself to a class of new Starfleet cadets. I wonder if they’re gonna address why his brand new immortal android body behaves like a 90 year old human.

Vanity. The show is called Picard. He was basically Jesus Christ in the first season. Pure vanity, and probably a lot of money.
