sure
but the original series addressed social issues of it's time
Racism
Equal rights
Peace
Civil rights
war
greed
world peace
acceptance of other
etc etc
It was very profound...growing through the 70s
I love these synopsis, because you could get this from watching 2-3 episodes, which is exactly the amount the STD writers got.
Episode 2 of the current show, shows what trek really is about.
Spoiler: Aliens are religious zealots and they turn out to be right.
There was no obnoxious speech brow beating them that their religious beliefs are irrational superstition etc.
Episode 3 genetically engineer group of humans attempts to unengineer their genomes, because they believe federation is right to engage in intense discrimination against them.
Star Trek isn't about 1 thing, it's about exploring everything. Every idea no matter who it offends.
And when it's done right with class and taste(not condescension), fans don't even realize that they are being exposed to beliefs that are fundamentally different from their own.
Anyways I'm liking the show intensely, they seem to realize what a massive proportion of the fanbase is like.
So far my favorite scene was when tactical officer and 1st officer complaining "they don't need to take vacation". That's star trek. Star wars fans fantasize about having magical force powers, Star Trek is about fantasizing you get to degauss the defector array, and if you're lucky maybe the captain will say "good work"
.
