The stoner/doom bassists thread...

So, I'm a fledgling bassist, and I happen to really enjoy stoner/doom.

My practice is pretty general/rock oriented at this point, and I don't have the chops to do much more than play simple (like, really simple) blues scale-based riffs.

A couple of questions then.

1: Any other scales that are particularly stoner/doomy?

2: Any EQ suggestions for cool tones? I've got a simple Vox practice amp with a 4 band EQ (bass, mid low, mid hi, treble), a bass with an active EQ, and a Russian Big Muff.

Hit up Jaxx in Springfield! Their only thing is they want bands to sell 50 tickets. Which can be a pain, but should try to play.

jaxx sucks and is a waste of time. its a shame cause the venue itself is cool but dealing with them is such a nightmare, and the tickets thing only works if youre in highschool or arent employed and have all day to whore yourself around to pre sell tix, which they give you like 15% of lol.

Aeolian and Phrygian. I tend to just randomly switch between those 2 and the blues scale off my root note. Then I'll throw in a relative major every now and then.

I tend to crank my low mids to cut through and adjust everything else to my preference. My EQ for your setup would be something like noon 5o'clock 3 o'clock 1o'clock. Just experiment with EQ it kinda depends on your bass but remember low mids is what cuts through generally.

park ridge, il huh? you're a stones throw away from me...

Harmonic minor(minor w/ a natural 7th) works real well too.

I actually moved 3 blocks south and technically I'm in Chicago now lol. Moved to the other side of I-90. You over by me or in Edison Park? Out of curiousity your picture looks familiar if you are at the GC in Arlington Heights I think I talked to you about Acid Bath like 2-3 months ago. Cool band btw I'll try to catch you guys sometime if I'm not working.

But to the scales dude. Just stick to the minory keys and you pretty much get the drift. Realistically if you wanted to you could just play a modified blues scale and just use b2/2 or b6/6 or b7/7 as you see fit. Just experiment with different sounds under the chords sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

Mmmmmmkay. So where do you play to see ya?

balls bluff, small bar in leesburg.

so addictive, bar in herndon.

krugs place, cool venue in frederick MD.

this area does not have a lot of venues for loud/heavy music, most of the ones we used to have got shut down because idiots would fight and get the club in trouble so theyd stop the shows. truly a shame that stupid people ruin good venues for the majority that dont act that way, but it is what it is.

+1

I just started a little project with a drummer buddy and I'm on guitar. It's like super spazz, never play the same riff more than 4 times in a song, and it goes from sludge to grind to punk to shoegaze all in the same song which hovers around 1 minute. Once we get everything final with a singer, I'll post it up if anyone wants to hear it.

Listen to Pig Destroyer's Starbelly kind of the same idea
