Ahem.

Any of you guys want to get a similar treatment, lemme know (through here or through the email on the site).

Rad. ha Thanks a lot man.

Last night, during all the noise and feedback I do at the end of our set, the stage was shaking so damn much that my vision blurred like crazy. I've had my vision blur a little bit before from playing but nothing this intense. It was nuts.

Jealous. I really want to play loud and noisy again. Haven't been able to unleash my 8x10s in a while...

On a slightly different topic, what strings are you guys using? I am really diggn' the La Bella 760FX on the BG but not sure if I like them on the 4001. I ordered some sadowsky flats, apparently made by la Bella, but they are a little more bright and growly. The 760FX just have a little difficulty cutting through on the Ric for some reason. So we'll see how that goes. Also looking for a set for the J-bass. Got some fender flats right now, not sure if I want to stick with flats or try some rounds on the jazz...

I switched to Blue Steels a few months ago for another band (AIC tribute), but found they've worked pretty well with the stoner metal thing. Since I now have another bass for that (and the other grungy stuff I do), I'm thinking of switching back to Boomers; it might fit a little better musically.

Speaking of Boomers, I've used them on a 5-string MIM J-bass and they sounded really good. I'd definitely recommend giving them a stab.

Watching some Weedeater on the youtubes. Two things took my attention.

1) Dixie is using a Squier affinity bass. I've heard he never changes his strings and that they are rotten stumps. However he is also using the most bottom end P bass you can buy. That is amazing.

2) He is using Sunn gear. He appears to be using a Concert Bass and a slave. Those puppies are 200 watts and SOLID STATE.

So therefore all this talk of valves, 500 watts and Rickenbackers is all entirely and utterly wrong. Its all about the attitude. Down a bottle of cough syrup and play on.

I think sometimes this thread runs dangerously into the 'stoner nerd' country, where you get dudes that talk like "hey, me and my buddies made this awesome gravity bong and then we smoked approx 2.5 ounces of strong marijuana in it and felt a buzz for several hours and proceeded to listen to The Dark Side of the Moon because that is apt music for the occasion". The correct answer is "Brrrgggghhhhwwaaaaaaaa" with your eyes crossed.

Dude, let people take stoner/doom music the way they want. There are a wide variety of styles within it and, as such, a wide variety of opinions and discussion styles. Allow it.

That being said, Weedeater's bassist made me recognise that my own Squier Affinity Jazz Bass is perfectly apt for stoner/doom and I don't need a "better" bass (which is a invalid anyway; Squier Jazz Bass is the best bass ever).

What's wrong with Rickenbackers and tubes??? ;) I just started a band in the stoner/sludge vein. I have played everything from funk to punk and death metal to pop and never played in a band that plays the music I'm into. I also always kinda been what I call a "highered gun" meaning I have never really started a band from the ground up since i was a teen, not including cover bands. The band I started with some buds is a three piece with me on vocals (Kinda :) ) and writing tunes and vocals is the the hardest but most gratifying project I have ever been a part of.

there are plenty of bands that use solid stat heads. you use enough of them and youll get that psycho volume level, especially old sunn heads which seem to somehow get to psychotic volumes even tho they have lower wattage ratings. a lot of people use a sunn head then daisy chain a ton of those slave amps after it.

but weedeaters bassist doesnt have great gear, thats obvious. ive never seen them live so i dont know how good he sounds or how loud he gets, but im almost positive theres no way hes gonna reach the volumes of certain bands ive seen with one solid state head.

but who cares, weedeater rules lol!

My DOOOOOOM rig was SS. Acoustic 370 into a 301 cab. I played clean (no fuzz at all!) and I used G&L's and P Basses. There is no formula. But some of our heroes played Rics and tubes.

Case in point:

There is a difference between understanding the aesthetics of a genre and enforcing them.

Dixie indeed never changes his strings. If you check my picture you can see that the G string is barely visible because it is completely coated in rust.

And his rig is pretty damn loud. He's not just using one SS Sunn head, he's also using one of the slave amps into four 15" speakers.

I mostly lurk and don't post much, but I think y'all'd get a kick out of my 3-piece stoner/prog/psychedelic instrumental band. Here's a demo. I'm pretty proud of my parts, especially on Between the Towers.

mescquire.bandcamp.com/album/pre-post-rock

We've all worked really hard getting these wild songs together, we'll be putting out an EP of our heavier (drop-D) songs this summer, with an album to follow.

I play a Pedulla through a Genz Benz Shuttle 9 with the preamp cranked- mean tone from a tiny box, and I'm trading my buddy my Basson 1x15 for his Trace Elliot 4x10, once I get my Mesa 1x15 fixed up I'll have the ENORMOUS SOUND that I feel this music deserves. Then I'll start buying pedals.

Without the time to read through 22 pages, if anyone is doing something similar in or around Texas, I'd love to hear it and get some shows together. :bassist:

It seems like what Meddle might be saying is that they're worried that this music might eventually get "commercial". And in a sense, be left with "If you're gonna play stoner/doom, you HAVE to use tubes and a Ric".(Or Sunns with Fenders/Squires). Am I in the ballpark?

Except they have a 2 year wait list.

If someone found the red Ric of doom then the entire scene would go under.
