The stoner/doom bassists thread...

West coast here too. And our band is also in need of a drummer. We've been holding auditions...Oy Vey.

Comments from drummers thus far. And we made crystal clear what we are playing, who our influences are, etc...:

"I'd say my biggest influences are Poison, Ratt, and Dokken."

"I don't know, I'm just not really feeling the slower stuff."

"I'm having a hard time finding the groove. I'll have to go home and f**k my wife harder tonight...or maybe I'll do my mistress."

"I really look up to Lars Ulrich. I think he's amazing."

"I just got tattooed on my arm, so I might be off tonight."

"I need to be honest. I've only been playing drums for a month...I really just wanted to play some music."

"Yeah, whatever I'm down to play this s**t. It's just stripped down rock n roll with a heavy emphasis on groove."

The last quote is kinda true, but he didn't really give me the sense that he had a passion for our style of music. And he was the glam-rock guy.

FML.

Every drummer I can ever track down either:

A) Wants to play in some sort of pre-existing bar-rock cover band

or

B) Thinks that they're the next Terry Bozzio or something and wants to play in 9/4 with polyrhythms and ethnic drums.

Been trying to get a doom band together for some time now. Eyehategod and Crowbar have played here so hopefully a scene of some sort has opened. Finding a drummer is a b**** around here. Everyone just wants to play hard rock, 300BPM metal, or deathcore. Luckily, I have found at least a guitarist who is into stoner/doom.

Scene sucks in upstate New York. :scowl:

That sounds like he Burlington VT scene also. it isn't even hard rock they are playing here, we got 20-somethings trying to play arena style dad-rock, then there's the deathcore, br00tal deathcore, youth crew style hardcore, or melodic deathcore...

I have been trying to start a doom band for years and it's really going nowhere.

I play a G&L tookay through a 70s V4-B and a big Emperor cab.

Hey, another Burlington resident!

Our scene could definitely use some work, but there are some happy exceptions (Torche played the monkey house last year, Zoroaster came two years ago, etc.)

On a slightly different topic, what strings are you guys using? I am really diggn' the La Bella 760FX on the BG but not sure if I like them on the 4001. I ordered some sadowsky flats, apparently made by la Bella, but they are a little more bright and growly. The 760FX just have a little difficulty cutting through on the Ric for some reason. So we'll see how that goes. Also looking for a set for the J-bass. Got some fender flats right now, not sure if I want to stick with flats or try some rounds on the jazz...

Let's talk doom rigs, rigs of doom, stoning rigs, and rigs of stoning. Let's talk all that is heavy and bash all that is light. Bottom line, let's rock... And listen to each other's music and friend each other's bands and play shows and drink spirits. :bassist:

I have a GK 700RB/115 Combo with a Hartke 2.5XL extension. I set the 4/5 string button to 5 string and that rig will make babies explode.
Seriously...do NOT play this thing around little babies...

i tune very low so i use Circle K strings. the gauge for my lowest string is a 166, thats tuned to A or G. works really well and they sound very good.

btw our show last night with billows was awesome. we will definitely be playing with those dudes again in the near future. dooooooooooom!

A rare occasion, my band had a show last night at a local bar. It was a benefit show to help our friends family get some money to help cover funeral costs. Got a picture from the show. We should have more soon.

I only wish I could have a picture of the soundguy sitting at his booth with his fingers in his ears. He told me later in the night that if the owner had been there, they would have shut the power off on us. Sports bars just aren't our venue I guess. ha

in your opinion, how much impact does that 18 have vs the 15s? i run a ton of cabs at the moment, and while i have a ton of low end already, im seriously contemplating getting a solid state sunn head and pushing it into one of those accugroove 1x21 cabs.

its not gonna take a ton to convince me as i already want one but id like your thoughts.

The top 2x15 is really shallow. Pretty much all mids.

The bottom 2x15, an Acoustic 406, is super punchy with lots of low mids and pretty solid lows.

The 18 is just as punchy but is mostly lows and low mids. Pretty sure it's an old PA cab.
