BassJ.: thanks for the clip! that is quite a similar sound. i think earlier i said the SUPERCOLLIDER was akin to a muff in many ways... but it's apparent that it is, in fact, closer to ToneBender in its fuzzy character. i appreciate the clarification!

Remember kids - a tonebender IS essentially a muff - but with one less transistor stage (3 instead of four), one less pair of clipping diodes (1 instead of 2), and low gain silicon trannies (BC184C instead of 2N- something or other.)

What does this mean? it means everyone out there with a big muff - russian, nyc, whatever (just not the IC muff or the LBM) can mod their muff to sound like this pedal.

It's becoming rapidly apparent that a tonebender and its variants are the DEFACTO bass fuzzes.

Or go to General guitar gadgets - spend $65 and anothr $10 for the extra componets and build it your self - into a 125 sized box nonetheless - which would make it smaller than the Supercollider - BINGO we have a winner!

honestly I really think bassists should get into building their own pedals. It's really not a lot of work and the rewards are clear!

Cool thanks. Actually I've built one of the GGG muff kits; I did the tuned BMP which is cool but has nowhere near the low end and smoothness of my old green sovtek.

I think it would be really cool to do but have the mods switchable.

You can get the GGG BMP kit with out the box [I asked if they would and and they put up the option up on the page], I put the ones I built in those pimp'n purple boxes from pedal parts plus with MXR knobs.

From what I've read, essentially most distortion and fuzzes are variations from the Big Muff or fuzz face. I believe the neo fuzz might do the gated thing well, but I don't have first have exp. with it. I know Electronix Pedals has a bass fuzz that is very gated (too much for me at least). The Wren and Cuff Pickle pie does enough of the gated thing for me though (the neo fuzz is something I'm also strongly considering to replace my pickle pie). If you have a passive bass look into the ZVEX Woolly Mammoth (fuzz face). Typically the fuzz face doesn't do well with active basses due to the impedance, but the Neofuzz has an impedance control for that reason. If you want to use the Woolly Mammoth then a Barge Concepts GLZ should help with the impedance issue.

I've always loved the Wooly Mammoth but I have an active bass and am not willing to add another pedal for it to work, hence my interest in the neo. Looks like it should work. This Supercollider sounds like it's a bit more radical sounding.

I tried the GLZ, and couldn't get it to dial my Mammoth back into Mammoth territory, which made me sad. Geoff at Barge was totally cool, though!
