Yeah it seems like they start to show signs after an hour or so of use. If you've run it more than an hour with no problems you should be good to go.

Fortunately it only takes me 30-45 seconds to run a tube through the tube tester, so I don't need to add that extra hour to my process since screening the tubes woth the tester should catch these.

You were able to verify that the tester shows the issue right off without having to burn them in for an hour? That's awesome!

There is a vendor that I use that is 1/3 cheaper per tube but has a 20% failure rate (at WAY smaller qty than you) and it would be nice to not have to run a tube for an hour to find out. Heck it's just nice to know this isn't just a me problem.

So, who/where is a reliable source of tubes? I was starting to wonder if I had bad luck as I have had to replace a few too soon I felt. (I don't have access to a tube tester)

I've always had good luck with Tube Depot.

Assuming your referring to the Finally V2 WBIM given you posted this last week:

Finally v2 arrived and I have a question. If the knob near the xlr is fully on there is a volume loss going to the 1/4 plug, is that right? I assumed that was volume for the d.i. and not for the 1/4 inch out.
Also the Gain knob is scratchy sounding. Strange for a new pot.

If that's the case, swap the tube for a 12AT7, 5751, or a 12AX7. Those are listed in increasing levels of gain.

I'm willing to bet a 12AT7 or 5751 will be the ticket for you.

If your Finally V2 already has a 12AX7 [as those usually do] you might need to smash your input with a gain boost pedal. I often use a TC Spark mini for extra squash, other times a Mosky Xp or other EP style booster. .

My Finally V2 has a NOS 12au7 rolled into it so it doesn't break up the same as a typical Finally v2 with a 12ax7. They get MUCH hairier. That said, I pushed the AI bass stem much hotter than I typically run and could hear some obvious OD on when soloed. The clip labeled full is the "flat" selection on the switch. The one labeled HPF has the HPF engaged. I tried to gain match it to the original AI stem and drop each line back in. See what you think of those.

Wow! I like both versions better than the original but I think the non-HPF version is my favorite. Sounds really thick and warm. It also stands out as its own thing instead of just kinda blending into the other tracks.

Different strokes for different folks. Glad I could give you an idea of what to expect out of it. That was pretty cranked gain with a 12au7 so you might enjoy a 12at7 or 12ax7. I had it a hair past 3 oclock and it goes to 5 oclock. I typically keep min around 12-1 oclock.

IME once you get into tube preamp pedals it helps to have a selection of these to try to find what works best for your needs. This is just as true with 2 tube pedals ad single tube versions. I often get very pleasing results tube rolling. For example one of my Underground Accelerator pedals has a JJ 12AX7MG tube that sounds great on guitar and fretless bass due to the enhanced mid range and different boost characteristic. My Smoke Signal has a lower gain in the T1 position that tames that feral beast of a preamp.

For me the 12ax7 was way too much gain. I couldn't get past 8-9oclock with it starting at 7oclock before I had too much drive for me. That left a lot of unused range for me. It sounded fine, but I wanted more of a saturator not an overdrive. I tried several NOS 12AX7s I had and some were cooler than others but pretty much the same results. I then went to a 12au7 and found much less gain and I could play with that barely starting to want to break up range a lot more. But I could still get a bit of hair on it if I pushed it pretty hard. If I want more than that I have pedals and a DarkRay. So I rolled a couple 12au7s and settled on a NOS RCA I had. Funny enough, my JJ that came with it took a crap while I was rolling tubes.

A bad tube will be quickly apparent, within a few minutes at most.

With a stock 12AU7 where on the Gain knob would it start to break up with a P bass? I definitely want some grit.
I'm still undecided between the Finally and the Slampegg
