With a stock 12AU7 where on the Gain knob would it start to break up with a P bass? I definitely want some grit.
I'm still undecided between the Finally and the Slampegg

Too many variables to tell you. How hot are the pickups? How close are they to the strings? Active? Passive? What do you play like? My suggestion is to order it normal with a 12ax7. Then if you think it's too crunchy/hairy/fuzzy/drivey for you order a 12au7 and swap them. You're out an extra 20-35 bucks b but you now have a pedal that can do the clean to mild stuff or get adjusted to go mild to hefty.

Any way you look at it, there's no better way to get a tube in your signal path from a cost and convenience perspective. By the time you factor in the feature set and the conveniences of size and power requirements.... It's a no-brainer to pick up.

Just regular passive P basses, normal pickup height, normal output, finger plucking between the pickup and the fretboard.
I wish it was possible to order a Finally with a 12AX7. ATM it ships with a 12AU7 only.

They sure do, they're a drop-in replacement. 12AY7 is what Mike Watt uses in his Finally.

Really??? I knew the pins fit but somebody told me something about not being able to use a 12ay7 where a 12ax7 because of something voltage wise. So I intentionally never tried it.... Aww hell, where's my phillip's head?

Question on the 12au7 tube in a Finally. I know it has lower gain. So, if I’m understanding right, if I’m slight breakup about 9 o’clock with 12ax7, it would hit the same further around at maybe 3 or 4 o’clock? Is there a difference in the character of the breakup or the tone with the 12au7 prior to and at breakup? Differences in how it affects the volume?

Thinking about rolling in a 12au7 for use with my active bass and keeping the 12ax7 for when I use my passive bass. Thinking I’m hitting breakup earlier now partly due to my active bass preamp. In the end it’s fine, but will be fun to experiment.

Depending on your pickups and what else is in the chain, it can be possible to have a Finally with a 12AU7 fully cranked and still not breakup. It will be very loud at that point, but clean.

When it does breakup, the tone will be very different. There's a very good reason we use higher gain tubes for distortion instead of just low gain tubes biased such that they distort at the same point. In my opinion 12AU7 has a rather unpleasant drive character, it doesn't give the smoothness we expect from tube drives. 12AT7 is much better and the breakup is very similar to a 12AX7.

I am running a 12AT7 with my active bass in a Finally V1. I can get edge of break up with a light touch with the knobs at noon.

True, but if I want consistency from set to set or gig to gig, I want to dime my volume knob and have settings on a pedal that I can replicate or mark.

Lets not forget there is a volume on the Bass and on the Amp to balance things out, no need to send the maximum signal out of the guitar.

Unless there is an onboard preamp, lowering instrument volume raises the output impedance of said instrument.
