As with most questions I kind of think the answer is "depends" I've used an eq pedal, a semi parametric rather than graphic but similar principle, and specific preamp style pedals, both work, both can sound great, it kind of depends what you want your bass to sound like. Using the eq pedal it's a more "transparent/plain" sound of your bass, although the finally definitely makes it sound a whole lot better than other di sounds, whereas the preamp pedal seems to shape it beyond the simple eq adjustments.
I prefer the preamp in front of it, currently I use either a sushi underground accelerator, or barber Linden, but I like the sounds of those pedals anyway, the finally just seems to bring them alive even more.
If you're playing jazz/fusion or something where you want to sound a bit more like a soloist alongside acoustic instruments then eq could be the way to go, if you're looking for a pop/rock/funk etc sound then a preamp might be your best bet.
