The Sushi Box FX Secret Society

I guess it's what you prefer. I like grit, drive, whatever you call it. Love my UA, Finally V1, Slampegg, not so much my More. It's too polite for me (Hard Rock band, play primarily alnico PUP Thunderbirds). I wonder if the More would respond well to 12AX7s?

@Thumper I was just going through this thread https://www.talkbass.com/threads/sushi-box-more.1610593/ about the subtlety of the MORE - I came away from it thinking that the More is intended to color with tooobiness but not really meant to drive.

I don't really know how rolling different 12A_7 tubes through it would affect it, but I'm curious. Thought came up because I'm going to loan my Finally (and some other pedals) to my guitarist because he's looking to change his setup to get some touch sensitive drive/edge of breakup stuff onto his board for his core sound. Not loving his amp but trying some tube based pedals before he goes as far as getting a new tube amp.

Just wish I had a UA because I think that's probably what he'd jive best with.

Sorry for my ignorance, but what does the output buffer on the 1/4” do for tone?
It isolates the 1/4" output from the XLR output, so cranking one will not affect the tone of the other, which was happening when they shared the same tap without a buffer. It wasn't generally a big issue, and it wasn't a complicated addition, it was just a "user experience" kind of thing. If you're turning the knob up on your XLR output, you don't want anything to change on your 1/4" output, and the buffer helps there.

More is incapable of driving by itself regardless of the tube in it, but 12AX7 in place of the 12AU7 will give you more output volume.

Thanks Nathan. My gig board has UA into Finally V1, home is Slampegg into More. My gig board has MORE going on. Same Basses, same Markbass heads and cabs. The only difference is the gig board has a Seymour Duncan Studio Compressor, home has a Markbass Compressore. Obviously I play louder with the gigboard which resides at band practice. I'm also going to photo the gig rig Markbass settings to verify those settings.

I had wanted a Neptunium, and whined about it, but now that I have the Finally with the 12au7, I like that and don't really need the EQ or extra special sauce I would get with Neptunium. I picked up a JJ 12ax7 tube so I can roll it in when I am yearning for the grittier Finally sound. What I am finding so far, but need to test it some more, is that I like the Finally with 12ax7 better with Jazz bass and the 12au7 better with P bass. Don't know why that is other than my silly ear.

Torn here over getting a Finally or waiting for the new Neptunium/picking one up used. I'd intend to use mine at the end of the chain either in the effects loop of my Quad Cortex or after, to add a bit of tube warmth to everything and act as a redundancy DI, should the QC let me down. From what i'm reading, the Neptunium is the more transparent of the two and the tube can't be pushed much at all, which would make me think the Finally is more what I may want. Yet something is drawing me to the Neptunium all the same? I wouldn't want the preamp to be too coloured, just more of a magic sprinkle on top of everything.

All this rave for the Finally over the Neptunium must be heartwarming to read for our chef. Good for him! Potentially bad for my wallet though...
Yup, absolutely. I like that I was able to make Neptunium work and get that sound in that box and make it small and sexy, and I love how much people are enjoying it, but it will never feel like it's really "mine". So I'm immensely proud when I hear compliments on Finally.

Neptunium is clean all the way. And if you leave the EQ and HPF off when playing in a busy live band, you could just as well use a standard DI in my opinion. Personally I like to crank the EQ, with or without HPF, to make it thump and sing, but that is music/genre dependent. From what I've read the Finally/UA circuit gives you more character, which I hope to experience myself sometime soon.

It's an interesting opinion, one that perhaps would mean there wouldn't be much of a waiting list for a Noble? Emperor's new clothes situation or is there not something great about it? I have zero experience with any Sushi FX preamps and i've never used a Noble, though I have dabbled with digital QC captures that I wouldn't say were super transparent.

Don't get me wrong, it's a great pedal. And also without knob turning it's not that it does nothing, there's something going on. What I tried to emphasize is that with a flat EQ it is, to my ears, very transparent in such a way that I doubt I could discern it from a standard Radial when in a band mix.

But I'm no less susceptible to hypes and thus grabbed a Neptunium when I had the chance. The transparency kind of surprised me when I first tried it. Then I started fiddling with the knobs and found many great sounds. Do I think the Noble thing/sound is a bit of a hype? Yeah kinda. We have a lot of great options for preamps and this is one of them.

I believe the second run of Neptunium will sell out as quickly as the first; mostly because it does the "Noble thing" at a significantly smaller size and lower cost... (and because there will be a limited number of them)

Either through hype, FOMO, or genuine need, the Noble has ingrained itself as the top-tier go-to for transparent DI with a hint of tube flavoring. Since I personally don't want or need a transparent DI, my bias does kinda think the sales/demand for the Noble (and Nobelium/Neptunium) are 80% GAS/hype-driven; but if someone does want that, the Neptunium is absolutely the best way to get it... but I still sincerely feel that the Finally can do 98% of what the Noble/Nobelium/Neptunium can do while also being able to do more.

It basically does come down to if you want just "transparent" and/or EQ (Neptunium),
or do you want something that can do virtually transparent and/or add color/grit (Finally)?
Either way, Sushi Box makes a top-tier tube-based DI.

Jack

P.S.: And I understand the FOMO, I've been suffering FOMO ever since Nathan did the runs of the Nobelium and the Neptunium; and I was pretty sure I was planning on buy one of this second-run of Neptunium myself... until I stopped and realized that the only reason I wanted it was because of it's quality and scarcity... and then the FOMO "Finally" stopped ;)

EDIT: Fixed incorrect naming of the Nobelium and Neptunium

I'm almost there - and honestly the discussion and comparisons today helped a lot.

I appreciate the honesty about FOMO. I’ve been hankering for a CAPO for months now, and I'm thinking it is partially driven by FOMO and also the fear that it will become the next Noble and get more pricey and even longer wait times.

At any rate I definitely plan to try a Finally V3. I run a fair amount of grit prior in my chain into the Neptunium currently which I think is why I love it so much, bit I also like the features of the Finally and the ability to add more tube grit.
