The Sushi Box FX Secret Society

I appreciate the honesty about FOMO. I’ve been hankering for a CAPO for months now, and I'm thinking it is partially driven by FOMO and also the fear that it will become the next Noble and get more pricey and even longer wait times.
About FOMO (and its closely-related cousin GAS), there's this "BISOU" method that is sometimes talked about over here in the context of (fast) fashion and can help with compulsive buying (particularly during sales) by asking oneself a few simple questions ; a rough recap :
  • Besoin (need) : which need does the product satisfy? Do I want it because marketing made me believe so? Or simply because X person uses it?
  • Immediate : do I need it right now, or can I wait and think about it?
  • Similar : do I already own something similar / that fulfills a similar function?
  • Origin : is it made sustainably / responsibly? Is the brand reliable, transparent and honest about their manufacturing process, labor practices? Is it made to last for a long time, or cheap junk that will quickly fall apart?
  • Usefulness : how long / how often do I expect to use it? Do I have to own it, instead of borrowing/renting it?
Not to deter anyone from buying sushi-stamped gear obviously (my UA has been living on my board for close to 3 years now, and it's there to stay), only to help make the best buying decisions that will make everyone involved happy in the long term
Sushibox is definitely among the best in my opinion, by being the kind of brand you want to support, making unique, dependable, sturdy, reasonably-priced gear that you can actually get and use ; that already ticks several of the boxes.

You guys are all guessing too abstract. It's not that exciting. Hell, I'll give you a nice boring hint: it's another preamp.

a ua610 is a classic
Well I would never have thought about a tube mike pre-amp / DI, but I am now.
That UA610 might be a nice project for someone to remake into a nice pedal, just saying is all.
That would be nice for a home studio as well.

The minimum power requirement for the Finally v3 is 500ma and my Cioks SOL can deliver max 500ma at 12v. Currently running it at 9v but I’m curious if there’s any drawbacks or benefits to running it at the minimum draw at 12v.

Once they are warmed up, they usually actually run a little lower ma than that. Should be fine.

As @Parzival mentioned the max power draw is used to initially warm the tube then they settle down. So as long as you're giving it enough mA for startup it shouldn't matter what voltage it's getting. Something similar just came up on a different thread so I might as well post it here too...

From the SushiBox FAQ:
All Sushi Box tube pedals have internal voltage regulators, which means whatever voltage you send it (9-12v) it is always running at the same internal tube voltage of ~300v. If you're looking to change the breakup, you could look at replacing the tube itself.

No benefits or drawbacks to how you'd be powering it, as long as it's powered properly the tube won't see the difference.

Watching Phil Mann play makes me want to be a better bassist. He's one of my favorite people I follow on social media and also one of the nicest dudes I've ever met, aside from obviously being a beast of a player.

Teen Town, that Weather Report tune, is HARD to play as cleanly as Phil did at tempo. I'd encourage trying to learn it at least once. You'll learn a lot, even if you never get it all down. I never did, but it was fun trying to get there. I agree with Nathan that Phil's video is inspiring, and it was instructional to see the song being played. I may have to try to work it up again..

Nice combination, Genzler Re/Q and Finally! I'm also currently doing the Genzler/Sushi combination with my More and Single Slice going into my 350-10-2 combo input.

Pretty sure I read here that there's no benefit to running these pedals at 12V and in fact that might wear out the tube faster but I'll let Nathan explain. I also have a Sol and I think it delivers over 600mA per outlet at 9V

Has anyone tried parallel mixing with Sushi Box pedals? I am considering a bit of drive or fuzz (maybe Tarantula or overdriven Underground Accelerator?) blended with the Grand Slampegg out to Finally to see what happens. I usually prefer clean tones but thought a bit of dirt might help me cut through the mix. Looking at the Tyler Deluxe or WetterBox to get it done.

That seems expensively redundant. What are you trying to achieve? Why not straight in the SLO?
Took me a minute to realize you were abbreviating Shift Line Olympic, I was trying to figure out why I would want to plug a Neptunium into this and why that would be useful to a bassist.

Chasing tone I guess. I've been messing around with an HX Stomp for a few months and a basic patch with the Noble pre into my SLO just feels... thicker. But it seems like a waste of space to keep the Stomp just for that.
Honestly, if that is the only thing you use your Stomp for, sell it and get a Neptunium.

I utilize two tube preamps myself, one at the very beginning of my pedal signal chain, and one at the very end.

However I still very much GAS for getting a Sushi tube preamp of some kind.

Seems like I might want to hurry up deciding since I live in Europe, before the trade war kicks in.

I posted this in the Stomp thread earlier this morning, but it just seems like I gravitate towards the pedals I already owned (Source Audio and Iron Ether) over the sounds I'm getting from the Stomp. I'm not flying for gigs, or touring with a space constraint, so I'm leaning towards sticking with a bigger board for now. The Stomp has been cool to mess with but it feels redundant for my current needs. That said, I do like the Noble sound it has and I like it even more pumped into my SLO, which is why the Neptunium has been on my mind.

While many combinations work well in the box digital domain IME the same combinations don't work IRW and versa visa.
As far as stacking stages especially preamps I also find that there is a point of redundancy and often diminishing returns as those voices ten to cancel or over-enhance certain characteristics. YMMV.

Definitely hear that! We certainly benefit from a plethora of killer options these days. Money isn't tight at the moment so I was also considering holding onto the Stomp, getting the Neptunium and then A/Bing the Stomp into it vs the SLO.
