Is the same true for the 1/4" out now the the Np 1/4 is buffered - or is there still a slight difference between the 1/4 out on the Np vs. No?
It's not so much that the XLR and 1/4" have their own dedicated tube, it's more like the signal branches off after the first tube. One side goes through a D.I. transformer to the XLR output, the other side goes through a tube output buffer and on to the 1/4" output. So the first tube and thus the tonestack and HPF is for both outputs, but the second tube is only used by the 1/4" output.I think the difference there is that the XLR and 1/4" both have their own dedicated tube, whereas on the Neptunium they share one. I'm not going to pretend to know what role the new buffer plays, but I assume there's still some difference there, particularly if both are cranked.
There is still going to be some difference between Neptunium and Noble/Nobelium on the 1/4" output, because the current version of Neptunium uses a high-voltage FET buffer instead of a tube buffer for the 1/4" output, as I obviously can't fit another tube in there. The high-voltage FET is the best option I've found for solid-state buffering, and a buffer is the least noticeable place to stick a solid-state component in a tube circuit, but if a high-voltage FET sounded exactly the same as a tube, I would make a lot more solid-state pedals.
