The Sushi Box FX Secret Society

Thank you for the information!

I'm embarrassed to say that I have never actually looked at my pedals to see what they needed for power. I have one that says 200mA. I don't think I've ever plugged it into the 100mA? I guess it just wouldn't work? Or not work well? Is it safe to assume that a plug on the DC5 that gives 300mA could be split to two pedals that required 100mA & 200mA? As long as the two pedals don't require more power than the plug delivers it's fine? Is that how it works?

For the Neptunium specifically, it looks like the plugs on the DC7 provide 660mA at 9v for each plug. So I could just run one power cord from a DC7 to the Neptunium and it would run fine? Correct?

Thanks again!
Yes, that’s the power supply Nathan from Sushi Box recommended for such a set up earlier

Yeah, your 200mA pedal might not work on 100mA - I don't know the specifics of others, but with digital pedals or other solid state pedals I can imagine they might be a little pickier since they probably don't have a warm-up draw - they're stating their operating amperage.

If you have a DC7 that's perfect - the regular center negative cable is just fine. that's what I (and a lot of other folks) run. I picked it up after I got a second pedal that required 300+ mA. My board is run off a DC7 (with a Cioks 4 expander) and 4 of 10 pedals pull 300mA or more.

Day 3 of Np being stuck in UK customs, hoped its debut at the gig on Saturday would be safe, but appears very unlikely now :(

Why don't things just work the way they used to?

Well, my last brand new Wal delivery, Customs had it for 3 weeks! And that was a 3 year build.
You wanna talk aggravating!

daisy chaining is normally fine but can cause issues with some pedals. You just have to try it out. I’ve experimented switch popping more when doing that and some pedals have higher start up draw. So if you’re right at the limit it might not work.

DC7 will run any sushibox pedal no problem.

Here is my current recording setup

I'm looking for a second preamp for a different flavor than the Genzler

Maybe even used with the Genzler for added sauce.

I've been recommended the Underground Accelerator.

The More has been floated as well.

Thoughts?

If you like the genzler and want to still use it then the UA is perfect because the eq can be turned off. i use my UA and Finally v2 with a Broughton RFE as my equalizer on 2 seperate pedalboards.

@TaylorJ you should be fine just using a single 300mA outlet at 9V
I am not comfortable with that statement. I just measured Neptunium on my bench and it is pulling 370mA from a 9V supply after warmup. Some power supplies are capable of exceeding their published limits, I know from personal experience that OneSpot typically can, but I wouldn't give a blanket statement that a 300mA supply is enough for a Neptunium and I will continue to recommend at least 500mA.

You can attenuate the XLR out volume and the 1/4 out volume inside the pedal. When you open up the pedal, you will see the 2 trim pots in the upper right area. I would start with very small adjustments. The gain will still be pretty hot due to the type of tube, but you will have more control over level.
Finally v3 does not have internal trimpots. I designed the circuit to have what I consider to be a healthy range without the need for internal adjustments.

I take it back :D

I'm a huge fan of the Elementary and Detective, both of which are based on the HiWatt DR-103 preamp. The HiWatt tone stack is an unusual one, and it's impossible to get it completely flat... so ditto with the Elementary and Detective. But following Senior Sushi's guidance, I used a white noise generator and Audacity's Plot Spectrum Tool I found that flattest settings that I could.

First is with bass/mid/treble at 11-5-9 (using clock face terminology). 5 means mids fully clockwise...dimed...turned all the way up. Pretty flat until 1K, with a roughly 2 db boost above that.

Next is 12-5-9. You can see that boosting the bass just a bit has the effect of scooping the mids by roughly 2 2b because the highs remain boosted.

View attachment 7161244

Last is 12-5-8. Highs are slightly reduced.
View attachment 7161256

Some takeaways... 1. The mids will be scooped unless the mid control is at 5. 2. The treble control is very powerful. - anything over 8 boosts the treble. 3. I have too much time on my hands.

Further fiddling finds flatter (see what I did there?)
Here's 11-5-7 There is still a peak above 1K, but it's reduced in amplitude to less than 2 db, which means it's barely audible.

That is awesome.
While I think it’s good to know where “flat” is, I don’t think that’s where the Elementary sounds the best. I see a lot of people on this thread getting caught up in the fact that the Hiwatt tone stack can’t be set flat. I don’t see that as a negative. A dip in the mids isn’t always bad and it generally leads to a more pleasant tone.

Fender tone stacks can be set flat, but how many people actually play with them set that way? I see a lot of pics in this thread with setting that approach 5-10-5. That’s about 15 dB of mid scoop, but it sounds good.

Finally my Finally v3 is here! It took a month to get to Krakow after a bunch of red tape adventures.

tempImageEBYdrh.jpg

Nathan put in a 12AX7 and a red LED upon request and immediately shipped it out.
It only took a week to arrive in Warsaw, where it proceeded to languish in customs hell for weeks.
Eventually I received a paper letter from another post office requesting proof of purchase, a description of the device and a declaration of safety.
Nathan quickly drafted a detailed document referencing all relevant EU regulations, I sent that along with a translation and then the post office requested I give them power of attorney to clear the pedal from customs. Two attempts to accomplish that later and it was finally released from customs.
Once it arrived in Krakow, I missed the delivery. Two attempts to collect the package from the post office later, I finally got my hands on it.

It sounds amazing! It's exactly what I wanted. It's also much more beautiful in person.
The only issue is that it's ridiculously loud. I know there's a trimpot in there somewhere to tame the output (is that the black one on the board?) but that bright orange 630V cap is telling me not to poke around in there.

Thanks Nathan @Sushi Box FX for the support along the way. Very happy to finally be a customer. You got yourself a shill in Poland!

Glad it got there okay! As mentioned above Finally v3 does not have an internal trimpot. The loudness is going to be because of the 12AX7, which has 5x the amplification factor of 12AU7. This means you can get 5x the breakup with the gain control, but it also means you have 5x the output volume with the level control.

Cool, I'll blow up the terrible dive I have to play tomorrow then.

And we start the set with Proud Mary...somebody put me out of my misery please :)

Thanks for that update. In my original post I mentioned combining a 300mA and 100mA plug to get to 400ma. The Neptunium website says 400mA is the minimum required. That means it will run at 400mA, but might have some trouble warming up? Is that correct? But it sounds like you actually recommend 500mA. 500mA would allow the Neptunium run the way you intended it to run? And anything above 500mA would just be icing on the cake?

Thanks

Neptunium just arrived! Can confirm, sounds just as great as the nobelium I recently got

These things are taking over my two boards on the end of the chain - excuse the sloppy wiring etc, WIP redoing things

Nobelium sounds great with the Cali 76 and spark, outside of fun effects I'm not sure what else you'd need for most projects aside from a tuner... But more is fun, too :)

It should theoretically be able to operate on 400mA, but it may take some extra time to warm up and may cause the power supply to power cycle a few times before it stabilizes, that's why I recommend 500mA.

All integrated into my setup ready for the gig tomorrow!

Love what its doing. I'm using it in conjunction with a Quad Cortex in such a way that the QC chain is running into it, and the XLR output is running back into the QC before being sent out to FoH/IEMs. This way, I get the lovely tube warmth and magic with a quick on the fly adjustable preamp, with a fallback DI available with just a couple of cable switcheroos. I also use the QC as a recording/practice interface, so keeping the Np within the QC workflow is necessary.

As shown in the pic, im getting great results by boosting the bass and flicking the cut switch to really thicken stuff out without adding the boom, and the treble brings back some sparkle absorbed by the tube. Instantly sound better, love it!

@TaylorJ you should be fine just using a single 300mA outlet at 9V. When I first got a Finally V2 all I had was a battery powered supply with a single 300mA/9V output, and a bunch of 100mA/9V outputs. The Finally never had an issue working off 300mA. I just checked my Neptunium with it and it kicked on just fine. From previous replies about the subject, the pedal only pulls the full amperage to warm up the tube and settles to a lower operating current after that. As long as your pedal isn't resetting while it's warming up you're good to go.

With 300mA it might take a minute or so to warm instead of 10-15 seconds. I always powered my board, plugged in the instrument cables to the bass and amp, tuned, etc. BUT as the product details recommend and as @johnk_10 has said, a more powerful supply might be in order.

Input voltage shouldn't make a difference (as long as it's 9 or 12) - it's stepped up to high voltage internally.

Regarding a plug to combine them, I don't know how it works with different amperages, but you should definitely run them at the same voltage. Additionally, as you step up the voltage on those supplies, they typically reduce amperage.

edit: my cheapo battery supply - nothing special, but handles a single tube pedal without issue Amazon.com
I run my finally v2 using a cioks DC7 without a hitch.
