Question for Nathan:

One of the things that I love about the UA is the tone stack bypass which allows me to add tube warmth and character to my signal chain without needing to fuss with EQ

But… I have really fallen in love with my Detective and Elementary. Would it be possible to add a tone stack bypass to either of those so that I could use them as a tone sweetener without the EQ?

It might be, I'll have to take a look. It's definitely not going to be straightforward as I don't leave a lot of room inside the enclosures, but I'll take a look and see if I think it could happen.

PMLE arrived today and just taken it for a blast... Sounds amazing. (Quelle suprise) Adds a load of warmth and punch before turning any EQ. On my board the More used to be last and I loved the sound but having the PMLE last now has just given it a damn load more balls and heft. (This is my Sushi engine room pictured) Sounds incredible on its own too. An absolute belter!

Looks like a tonestack bypass would theoretically be possible, but the hardest part would be squeezing a switch into the enclosure, depending on when your unit was built.

My opinion is biased because I like the scoop achieved by cranking all the knobs on the Hiwatt tonestack. Elementary with everything turned all the way up is a killer sound. I also have to admit I didn't personally think the tonestack bypass in Underground Accelerator was particularly necessary, I only added because so many people had requested it.

That being said if you can find room for the physical switch inside the box and you have solid soldering experience, it wouldn't be too difficult to hook it up.

I was daydreaming when my hand was clicking on the mouse from one link to another, I started on the C2CE forum and then just got lost.
I went from the Deep Dish to the Moore to Effectrodes LA-1A to the Radiomuseum looking up 13D8 tubes which can replace the 12AU7 in the LA-1A, the tube specs for the 13D8 mentions the 9AU7 is compatible but a different heater voltage.
Then I found a 9AU7 tube on Fleabay in the US and this made me wonder if anyone has ever tried a 9AU7 tube in any Sushi pedals when just using 9V, the 9AU7 tube needs a heater voltage of 9.4V at 0.225A instead of the 12.6V 0.15A the 12AU7 needs.

So has anyone ever tried a 9AU7 tube or even a 13D8 tube in any Sushi pedals ?
I think the Moore, Single Slice, Nobelium and the Neptunium all use the 12AU7 as standard.

I think I may actually have a 9AU7 somewhere, I remember picking one up years ago and I don't think I ever did anything with it.

More uses a 12AU7 for gainstage and 12AT7 for the buffer, and Finally v3 also comes stock with 12AU7.

Just got the Tarantula Fuzz. That is awesome! It has a tube depth that I didn’t know was a thing. But it is. It’s a thing.

And it’s definitely on the board. I was going between box of war and a green russian and I was fine with those. But this comes alive for me. Thanks for letting me trade in and get this killer fuzz @Sushi Box FX !

Would you recommend getting both, since I'm more interested in using them in the effects chain to add tubby color, tone, and some character to the sound (among other things) instead of using them as DI mainly? In fact, as a DI, I'm considering using an RNDI to get a transparent signal that respects the sound obtained with the pedals.

I'm looking for a tube, warm, deep, airy, 3D (if possible) sound. Mostly clean (not clinic) or without major distortions.

On the other hand, would you recommend a particular compressor to pair with and get the most out of these preamps? I'm considering three options: (a) Effectrode PC-2A, (b) Cali 76 Compact Bass, (c) Empress Compressor. I know they are different, and the choice will depend on what complements them best.

I'm also considering a DCX Bass or a Trickfish Signal Filter to shape the tone if needed.

I have a Brimar 13D8 in my Space Heater right now and it sounds delightful.

If you search my comments you'll see what I thought at the time when I rolled it in over a stick JJ.

There's a small difference slightly in favour of the 13D8.

If you’re just looking for tubey 3D richness and don’t need the DI the MORE is an excellent option. It won’t give you any dirt, but it will make your sound full.

The Neptunium also won’t give you any option for dirt, but the tone shaping is really nice. Boosting the bass into the gentle HPF is awesome. But if you’re looking at the DCX, they probably have a lot of overlap in the EQ.

If you’re hoping to get any kind of hair or dirt out of the tube, the Finally (or the underground accelerator, or the Elementary, etc) are better options. Having the gain control lets you dial in the amount of saturation you want, and you can swap in higher gain tubes to get dirt if you want. Stock the tube in the finally doesn’t really break up nicely, but there’s lots of options that are compatible.

I put a 12AY7 in my Finally and my core sound is an Empress Bass Comp, the Empress Bass Para, and the Finally.

I tried the Np but I like that little extra character the Finally had, so it’s back on the board.

+1 on the Brimar 13D8
there are loads of odd named tubes which work great.
Sylvania 6189w is also worth trying. it has “american” saturation characteristics.

This is why I didn't give to my Np FOMO.

I know I don't want clean, the finally. family of Sushi can dial in just the right level of hair.

BTW I had a chance to play with the Grand Slampegg for 5 mins this week.

I've principally bought it to set on my desk and sweeten up my tone going into my interface through my studio monitors and it really sounded good.
I really want to put a boost in front of it to get a bit off break up.

Instead of Finally or Neptunium, if you have the RNDI, try an Underground Accelerator/Space Heater and/or a MORE. I think a combination of those will get you where you want to be. If you don’t want a lot of grit, the MORE would do just fine. Are you looking for EQ though?

As @havnjero said a finally probably covers what you need here. I would add the RNDI isn't transparent as a DI. I had one for a bit and it does add colour to the sound but it is a pleasing colour, though I ended up going a different way.
