In most tube amplifiers the tubes sit in the open and can be affected by "radio" waves and stuff, Sushi Box pedals shield the tube really well and that eliminates a lot of the noise people associate with tubes. That's my opinion anyway, just like people use a Faraday cage to protect credit cards and stuff.

I received the Single Slice off Reverb last week but i’m having an issue that’s puzzling to say the least. It’s making a high pitched, ‘modulating’ whine noise when it’s in the chain, both when turned on and off. The weird thing is, whenever I turn either my overdrive (Singular Audio Tube Drve), or my octaver (Broughton Subsonic) ON, the whine stops. The whine also stops when I turn OFF the HPF on the Finally V3. This ‘fix’ only occurs if these pedals are AFTER the SS in the chain. I tried different outputs, both 9 and 12 V on my Cioks Sol, different power outlets, rooms etc and the problem persists. My Cali76 CB compressor in the same spot works fine. Anybody got a clue what’s going on? I’ve already sent an email to Nathan, but maybe someone here could chime in what could be the cause of such an odd problem?

passive P> Polytune mini> Tube drve> Single Slice, Subsonic, Finally V3 > Logic/sound console


Edit: Flipping the ground switch on the Finally doesn’t fix it

Are you daisy chaining or using Y splitters on any of your power cables?

I run a Single Slice along with a More at the same time.

I also use a Cioks DC7 pwr supply with a Crux Converter.

I'm running all of this with no issues.
Power for the Single Slice & More are setup without splitters or daisy chains, so they each have their own isolated power source from the Cioks pwr stuff and not sharing it with any other pedals on the board.

The hiss is part of the tone anyway, it's why carbon comp resistors can be preferable in some amps as they add musical noise.

Carbon comp resistors are slightly nonlinear under some conditions (large signal swings, like in the plate resistor in a high-gain stage), and consequently introduce some even harmonic distortion - I think this is the relevant "musical noise". I don't find hiss particularly musical.

One way out of this is for Nathan
to contact this GC, and explain to them
that it has come to his attention that
this dyi pedal was assembled incorrectly, and is not working.
To protect Nathan’s reputation, maybe
he can buy it at a greatly discounted
price, reminding GC that the next
buyer will return it anyway.

I just spoke with the store manager at the GC store in Cool Springs TN.

I explained to him what I knew from here on TB about the pedal. What I had see in the picture from here, what Nathan had seen and said, and how it was a DIY and not one Nathan built himself. It doesn't even have a Sushi Box logo on it.

When he heard that he said well that explains it, and that the DI Out was not working on it. He said he's putting it in the trash and getting it taken off the website. Said he appreciated the phone call and that they have no way of knowing these kind of things sometimes, which is understandable. Unless you know about Sushi Box, how would you know? I told him as such too. And you know if it was even tested that they never tried the DI Out. A lot of their employees probably don't even know what a DI Out is. He also said originally that it did come from another store so it wasn't even tested at his store until it got returned yesterday.

Anyway, that's my good deed for the day.
Now we wait and see how long it takes for it to come off the website.

Well we'll see if this manager holds up and does what he said he was going to do. I figured why not take 5 mins to make a phone call. I needed a break from practicing the bass line for Dragon Attack by Queen for a minute this morning anyway.

Well I had to ask, always start with the simplest of things and hopefully that fixes the issue. But not in this case I guess. If it makes you feel any better, it took me 4 yrs to get my board built the way I wanted and everything working flawlessly. Of course the biggest issue was always power. That was definitely the biggest piece to the puzzle for me.

I was so disappointed when my single slice showed up “broken“. I described my troubleshooting at length to Nathan and he had me send it back to him, only to inform me that it was in perfect working shape. It was at that point that Nathan apologized for missing the detail in my troubleshooting, that I was plugging it directly into a line level input on a powered speaker. The single slice is subject to weird behavior when it’s feeding an impedance that it doesn’t like. Now it’s amongst my favorites.
Nathan will undoubtedly get you sorted, but in the meantime, try plugging it into a proper preamp/head.

It's supposed to be going into the garbage if the manager does what he said he was going to do. All we can do now is wait and see.

Exactly. We’ll wait and see how long it takes before the manager assumes no one is paying attention…. And relists it.
Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE guitar center. Over the years they have been very good to me, I’ve just seen things.
