I promised I'd report back on further testing with the Edison, and I had a chance to dig into that further last night. I feel a bit bad about posting about the Edison in @Sushi Box FX's thread, but seeing as how the Westinghouse isn't out yet and there's been healthy discussion about the Edison so far and several people seem to be curious...
As I suspected, I didn't quite have the Edison at unity the first time, which is why it was really affecting the way the C4 sounded when it was Edison > C4. With the volume matched much better this time, I plugged the C4 and Edison into my Stomp's FX loop to easily play around with order and made a quick audio loop at the front of the Stomp's signal chain. That made it easy to test the order of effects with the Edison before and after different different things.
Recording into Cubase, I also noticed something curious... It appears that maybe the Edison has some HPF characteristics going on, or maybe that's just the characteristics of tube compression? (I don't have a ton of experience with tubes) Check out the screen grabs below to see what I'm talking about. While other effects weren't as drastically compressed as the Filter, this phenomenon was pretty standard across effects aside from the synth. Surprisingly for how big the sound is, the C4 seemed less affected by the Edison's compression as it already seemed to have a similar compression on it's own. (?... just looking at the visuals anyway)
Summary:
I do have preferences regarding signal order and ideas for use, but I'll refrain from expressing any preferences on order so it doesn't color anyone's personal opinion... I'll just say that I do like the tube warmth that the Edison adds, and it seems like it could be nice almost anywhere in the signal chain, so I do think I'm going to stick with the Westinghouse for my March order!
