I could, but that would actually force me to get things done instead of messing around and posting pictures of incomplete neat things

So I thought it would be neat to try a laser engraved faceplate, so I got some wood veneers and tried it out, and while it's not perfect I think it's pretty good for a first attempt.

Unfortunately no, I was 100% sure it was just that I had the wrong vactrol, so I got the right vactrol in and it still isn't compressing. It passes signal just fine and is a great-sounding clean preamp, but I can't get it to compress. It's been set aside until I have more time to sit down and think about it.

Also a some of you may have noticed that there hasn't been any news on Gondwana recently, it's still on my list and on my mind, but I don't have any updates worth mentioning, so I just haven't. I mean until now I guess.

Sorry I missed this question earlier. Audible difference yes, there's just a touch more low end with the bigger caps. Especially with the coupling cap, 22nF is a common value you see in guitar amps/preamps, but you almost never see it in bass, it's generally 47nF or bigger. Obviously Orange knew what they were doing with the AD200B so the 22nF doesn't completely cut your signal down to a thin brittle mess, but a bigger cap will allow more lows to pass.

Likewise a bigger cap on the cathode bypass shifts the response a little bit, I ran it through a sim to get the numbers, it was the difference between 35Hz and 25Hz if I remember right.

So audible difference yes, substantial difference no. As always I will never tell you not to buy pedals from me, but this wouldn't be a night and day difference over a LUX with a PA stack.

So put me down for one of these (if you are taking names and/or just seeing who all might be interested).

Well I'm going to go ahead and cave to the peer pressure. There won't be a waitlist per se, but I just ordered the parts I need to build the rest of the batch of these, so I'll open preordering for them tonight. This is more expensive to make from both a parts and labor aspect (carbon comp resistors, film and silver mica caps, etc. all hand-soldered on turrets), so it's going to be more expensive than a typical PAX/LUX. I think I am going to do a white powdercoat on the boxes and find a nice dark shade of wood for the faceplate. Oh man, silver knobs would pop really nicely on that.

Anyway, I'm thinking $300 for these.

That's a lot of variations on the same theme. Which one is your favorite?

I went from standard LU-mini to LUPAX. I had a brief moment to A/B them before I shipped the LU out, and at their heart they were very similar. I could EQ match them with a bit of tinkering. I think the mini-tube / LU tonestack version was maybe a little clearer, and the LUPAX a little fatter, but overall definitely cut from the same cloth. I posted a short review in this thread a while back. Happy to have kept the LUPAX, but in retrospect, now that I've tried them both, I would have been fine keeping the LU-mini too.

My favorite is the PA-Mini, which is why I have two of them. It has become the core of my sound and I have one on my main gigging board and my small board that I take to practice every week.

The LU-Mini is my next favorite and it lives on my home practice board. It's very very similar to the PA-mini and it COULD be an LU with PA tone stack but I don't know for sure.

To me the PAX and LUX sound very different and don't have the extended low end, fatness, and mid scoop of the Mini versions. They are still great but I just love the 'syrupy' bottom end of the Mini's as opposed to the more 'raw' sound of the X versions. I should note that I no longer have the X versions as I traded them both for Mini versions.

Take off the back cover and see if there's a serial number in it, if there is I can find out if it has PA tonestack or not.

Yeah I should probably pick a time so people know when to jump on. It will have to be after work, the number I can make will be driven by how many enclosures I have on hand as I don't have time to make an enclosure order before I go on vacation, so when I get home from work I'll see how many I have and can open up as many as 10 slots (as I know I only have 10 boards) depending on enclosures on hand.

So let's plan on like 9:00PM central time, does that work?

Maybe not this exact unit, but I'm sure there will be runs of similar builds in the future. I like the idea of building with mojo components, if I really wanted to be "boutique" that's all I would use, but I don't have the patience to do more than 10 or so at a time then I just get tired of it So I'll for sure do more designs in the future like this, you will of course hear about it here.

The plan is to put it in the In-Stock Shop, it will be listed as "Limited Edition Underground Accelerator - Preorder". I'll have to put some kind of picture on there, but it will not be exactly what the final preamp will look like.
