Sooo.....

I'm thinking about getting rid of Sashimi and bringing back Lab Rat as handwired. Nobody has said they hate Sashimi, but I feel like I got more positive comments on Lab Rat, and it's a bit more flexible with the clipping selector switch, the "0" setting can get some nice glitchy fuzz tones.

Thoughts?

Yes on HWLR. If you want to one-up it even further, move to a multi-position knob and give it more than 3 clipping modes. (Forgot who but a few companies have released something like this recently; Don't borrow their clipping modes 1-for-1, but "inspiration" )

I think one thing that might help is branding the pedals as for-specific-instruments. Does Sashimi really fit Bass guitar, or would it do better as a Guitar pedal? Maybe Fluffy Kitten is the same? I know FK has had some speak of low-end loss and/or the presence knob not doing much, maybe turn that into a bass cut/boost knob?

Yeah the JHS thing uses a rotary control with a microcontroller and a bunch of solid-state switches to swap clipping diodes, capacitors, op-amps, basically every single part of the circuit. I think 3 clipping options is enough (the board will be jam-packed as is) but I will be playing with some different diodes to see if I want to use something new instead of one of the old options.

The goal with everything is to make something good for everyone. Sashimi has a nice frequency response and works for bass, but when people think fuzz they usually aren't thinking what Sashimi delivers. It's not a bad circuit, I just don't think many people (myself included) are super excited about it and that I can use my time better elsewhere.

The mic preamp is still going to happen, right now it's waiting for me to get some measurements over to Mike at Lightning Boy so he can spec transformers for me. I still want it and I know other people do as well, it will happen, but it's on the back burner while I get the handwired stuff set up.

So it goes without saying that the mic preamp (and eventually the "deluxe" D.I. preamp as well) will go straight to handwired without an SMD version.

I'm pretty confident that is the only "illusion apple sugar" finished Lab Rat X, and I had forgotten how gorgeous that finish came out. I wish the illusion finishes weren't so darn finnicky.

Ah thanks, that makes more sense than anything I was coming up with At work we use PDR for Preliminary Design Review and I could not for the life of me figure out what else it could be.

Oh we LOVE our acronyms here. It's ridiculous. Just this morning I was talking to my SME about the HWDP and if we need an iRR and iPDR or just iCDR and if we need PM or CAM input.

Gotta love when the military uses the same ones and you need to figure out which program or contexts to determine whats what.

I like what I've heard for clips of the Sashimi, I just haven't been able to justify ordering one yet.

I used to teach introductory computer classes, and I'd have a list of at least a dozen acronyms for folks to learn.

At the bottom of my list was "TMA". I'd wait for someone to ask what it stood for.

The answer they got was "Too Many Acronyms", which would usually make the class of newbie nerds chuckle.

Back in the early 2000's I was working a project for a large legal firm with multiple local practice offices in Paris. Back then there were 18 separate tax jurisdictions in Paris. The client had 2 offices on opposite sides of a street in separate tax zones with different rates and regulations... We've all got our quirks. Glad you find some of ours fun!

It amused me how many ways FUBAR & SNAFU could be cornfused and discomrobulated. Those were not misspelled btw.

Back when I worked at the Ohio EPA, my life was approximately 58% acronyms. Now that I am an attorney in private practice (and a title agent), I am down to only about 31.67% acronyms.

I work at a Harley, BMW, and Ducati motorcycle dealership. All three use lots of acronyms, but very few of them cross over. Most of BMW's acronyms are based on German words and can be really confusing.

Not in a spicy I hope ;-) We haven't seen much Toro this winter what we have been getting is fatty Salmon belly. It's like salmon tasting butter. 1, 2 pieces as sashimi is enough. Too much fat and everything else tastes like salmon fat... and lately the Hokkaido scallops have been incredible. This is making me think I need to make a fish run to Portland ...

Little known... there is a natural wasabi grower on the Oregon coast. Fresh wasabi is stupid expensive but it is amazing.

Shime saba or madai. Most people mess up the mackerel, even really good chefs seem to blow it and make it taste like a pickle. But when it's on, it's on.

@Killing Floor I was an atlantic kid growing up. Ate my fill of Mackerel. Mussels too they were cheap... My fav recipe was to string/truss a small (tinker) Mackerel up with steel leader and a treble hook and use them for bait. Striped bass was my thing for a bit. My mom could actually cook Striped Bass. Talented lady but horrific cook... I learned to cook in self defense

I'll eat Mackerel sashimi today but sure won't seek it out... Albacore sort of occupies that niche here and in season Vunderbar! And cheap. The stuff freezes well. I generally have 1 or 2 loins in the freezer waiting. ginger, shaved scallion, wasabi -just a freckle- and ponzu...

I am going to have to make a fish run this weekend...

No, unfortunately no room for a clean blend without going to a bigger box, which I prefer not to do on a single tube build. I changed some values to get a richer bottom end, I'm going to see how that goes. Also scrapped the Rat tone control in favor of a Baxandall. So it's Gain, Volume, Bass, Treble, and Clip selector.
