The Sushi Box FX Secret Society

I'd like to know how this sounds, I've always liked the wattson
I'm biased, but I think it sounds phenomenal. I was doing some thorough testing of it the other night in the basement, and my wife texted me from upstairs: "TOO LOUD."

Definitely can't wait to hear what @johnk_10 thinks when he gets a chance to try it out.
 
This really doesn't affect anyone at all, but of all the pedals I build that fail testing, the vast majority is because the tube socket assembly had a bad solder joint under the tube socket, which makes it impossible to fix without removing the tube socket, which isn't really possible without damaging either the socket or the board. Currently I end up building a new tube socket assembly and just swapping the whole thing, which wastes time and parts. So I've been looking into new ways to mount the tube, and I may have found a winner.

Yup, I'd say that looks pretty good. Takes up a little more space than the previous design, but the way the space is allocated makes it still work. This is a mockup of a UA (ignore the "Sovteck" 12AU7 label, it's the only 3D model I could find) with the revised tube socket assembly, and just for fun also with a tonestack bypass switch. So basically a UA/SH. Does it work? I have no idea! It's 2AM. How is everybody doing?

I have a EQ bypass switch on another preamp, it's very convenient.
Even better would be to have switch (or a jumper) to choose if the main footswitch functions as a "True bypass" or "EQ off".
With "EQ off" selected, you could keep the SH always on, and use the footswitch to activate the UA tonestack. Very handy in a live scenario.

It's been on my list for a while, but the original intention was to implement this on the UA and discontinue the SH as this would make it redundant, but I haven't convinced myself to get rid of SH yet so UA doesn't have the switch yet.

Too bad. I've seen this on my Effectrode Blackbird pedal: an internal jumper changes the function of the external footswitchs like that (don't know why it doesn't change the main footswitch on the pedal though).

That makes sense, I could see Effectrode doing it. They do soft-switching controlled by a microcontroller, so the jumper just has to change a setting on the microcontroller and the microcontroller's programming tells it which relays to switch based on that setting. With mechanical switching we don't have the luxury of changing things very easily, microcontroller-based switching has a very clear advantage there.

Or could you let the client choose this as an option on the website when he orders the pedal? In the case of the Blackbird for example, I realize I moved the jumper to the "always on tube stage" position, and never need to change it.
 
How about an EQ toggle switch, but also a 1/4" jack that accepts an external latching footswitch that also toggles EQ :D

ON-OFF-ON Toggle, with the 1/4" jack (non-shorting) doing the same function via a TRS 3pdt external switch. To use 1/4" external, flip toggle to middle position. Middle position with no footswitch plugged in would == no signal, but think thatd be understandable if its labeled EXT.

Of course, for this "always on" special version of the pedal, the led would be always lit, but the color of the led would change when you would engage the EQ :). Let's say white led for the SH mode and blue or red for the UA mode.

Would this be sturdy enough when wiggling tubes in and out?

Would this also making tube rolling easier for the end user? It looks like the whole tube socket assembly can be unplugged, or is it still soldered in place?

just my suggest but PLEASE don't scissor your space heater box. the cat on guitar I'm helping on this upcoming tour got the donate from me of my first one when you brought me the hand wired version and the one word he used was "BIGGER" - I s h i t thee not and he has it always on now. great box, nathan, much respect to you. in my thinking, that baby's a keeper, it's 'pert-near like your very own pbass.

good news and bad news................
first the good news:
my handwired Dr. Wattson arrived early (today instead of tuesday!) and it sounds great, and even better than the non HW version (which already sounds great), since it has more headroom and a smoother, less flubby OD tone.

now the bad news:
#1 :the gain and volume pots have DC on them so they're very scratchy sounding when you adjust them. (the lower voltage one on the right doesn't have that problem at all).
bad news #2, you can run it with any other pedals, even with separate power supplies without it having a loud high pitched wine .
......and #2: both of them exhibit a pretty loud "pop" when switching from bypass to activate.
i guess that they're going to have to be sent back to remedy these problems.
