The Sushi Box FX Secret Society

I know this has been covered a dozen times at least... I went to change the tube in my Finally (from the 12ax7 to a 12au7). I got the old tube out, but putting in the new tube I pushed down on the top of the tube and broke the tip off. Clearly not the right way to do that. What's the right way? I was trying to wiggle it in with a piece of paper but seemed too tight and wouldn't go in.

I ordered a finally without a tube and installed a NOS Raytheon 12AX7 and I had to remove the input jack to seat it properly.

Worked out great.

It's possible to change the tube in Finally without removing the input jack, but removing the jack makes it WAY easier. It just takes a 12mm wrench.

I keep meaning to make demo videos of changing tubes in the different enclosures for reference, and I keep forgetting to do it. I'll see if I can make time tonight to shoot some quick videos.

Alright, news time.

This will go out as an email later, maybe tonight or maybe tomorrow morning, we'll see how far I get. My plan is to have July and August as normal, 40-slot batches, all typical options open, business as usual. I'm going to try to get the July batch ordering open tonight and I'll let the Secret Society know, then a few hours later I'll let the general public know via email to the mailing list.

September will bring some changes. I talked to a lot of industry professionals while I was at NAMM, and between advice given by a good number of people there as well as based on some discussions I've had with my wife, I will be getting rid of enclosure customization. I still plan to offer full color and simple artwork choices for now, but looking at numbers historically simple artwork has been more popular (with the sole exception of Slampegg) so I may eventually drop options and just have one artwork style per pedal. I'm still planning to continue to offer LED and knob color choices, but starting in September there will not be any more colored powdercoats. I love the looks of the different finishes and I enjoy offering options, and the upcharge made it worth the extra time initially, but I'm at a point where there are only so many hours I have available in a month, and I want to spend less time worrying about finishes so I can focus on other aspects of designing and building.

Also, I've been fighting raising prices for a while now, and I will continue to fight as long as I can, but there are a couple models (HW Lab Rat, SMD Finally, HW Finally) that are going to be increased either due to the amount of hands-on labor required, increased cost of parts, or both. These will not be big changes, most likely $20 per model. This price increase will also take effect in September, so I will continue to keep current pricing for July and August.

I apologize for the inconvenience that comes with change, and I hope everyone that's passionate about their colored powdercoats gets a chance to get some during July and August. As easy as it would be to take the "I don't care what you think, this is the way it is" attitude, I really do care what all of you think, and I hope you understand where these changes are coming from. I enjoy doing this, and I love seeing the enjoyment that my pedals have brought you, so I hope these changes will allow me to continue to keep doing what I'm doing more effectively and for a long time.

And I will continue to put overly busy full color artwork on my personal pedals, but I recognize that taste is a personal thing. I get it.

Nathan, I hope you didn't take that as some sort of "knock"

The full color artwork on your pedals has become a signature.

I could be browsing TB classifieds, and immediately recognize a SB pedal.

Not at all, I totally get it. I've only had one person make sweeping negative statements ("why are all of your pedals hideous?") about the full color. The general consensus is "it's cool, just not my thing." They do certainly have a "look".

HWUA is a standard offering now, but I don't have any plans to do the special edition version with the turretboard and wood panel again.

I'm hoping to get it boxed up by the end of this month for thorough testing, and as long as there aren't any serious changes needed I expect to be able to offer it as soon as August. It's dual tube in a large box, but it's all SMD and only one footswitch. I'll have to see how much labor it takes to get it fully boxed up, but I would estimate around $250 for it.

My oldest knows how to solder, she's put together a (non-production) board by herself and she does an excellent job for an 8 year-old, but she would need a lot of practice before I trust her to build unsupervised, and reliable, unsupervised, more or less unpaid labor is what I would need to actually make a difference.
